Mas de Guatemala

There are lots of cool things to buy for really cheap in Guatemala, and though the best food ever isn't one of them, it's worth coming for some of them. Sunday I went to Chichicastenango with my group and I got skirts and shirts and little silly craft things. Oh, and a Chicken Hat!! Well, they're not pollo's, they're gallo's which is what the guy told me. Gallo, btw is the name of the most popular beer here. It's really cheap, and it's pretty much like Corona, except a little cheaper. I think I might bring a bottle or 2 back.
Also available in Guatemala are all sorts of fruits I've never seen before. I went with mi maestra today to a nearby town called Pastores to buy boots. It's basically Boot Town, Guatemala because there's a street where all there is are tons of tiny boot shops. We had to go to almost all of them before finding one who had my size in not high-heeled boots. The ones I got are sorta cowboyish, but not too much. Oh, back to the fruits! So on the way back, we rode the bus that stopped at the edge of town where the market is. It's huge and full of dirty little shops selling everything in no particular order. There, I got some fruits called Jocotes which were very similar to loquats, but different texture a little. I washed them really well back at school before devouring all 5 of them. (They sold 5 for one Quetzal, which is like 12 cents.)
Yesterday at school I was eating lunch with some of the other maestras, and one of them offered me some Zapote, which is brown on the outside, shaped like a big avocado or mango, and has orangey-red flesh sorta like... umm avocadoey? It was really interesting, and they ate it with spoons.
I'm buying lots of other little things here, like drink mixes, and chocolate to make hot chocolate which I'll bring back to the US, barring them noticing and making me throw it all out. Yep. So back to class! Today's the last day before my big test tomorrow, and then I'm jumpin' on a plane to Boston!
