Herbert Hoover probably received an unfair share of criticism for the Great Depression. Economists disagree on what caused the great economic catastrophe, but it seems unlikely that it was the work of just one man. poor Herbie
if ever there was a man who didn't fit the office it was him
a good man but unsuited in temperament and outlook
he was shy and seemed remote
when what was needed was what FDR brough - a huge toothy grin and optomism

Psychologist Dr. Martin Seligman wrote an entire book about the advantages of optimism. I'm afraid Hoover was too pragmatic to follow "fake it till you make it". If he could have, FDR may have just been the answer to the trivia question about who lost elections for both the office of Vice-President and President. Then again, MacArthur didn't help matters for Hoover.
