Someone has been watching the blog and leaving antagonistic reviews on a couple of the Suethor's fanfics after I post the entry for them. I honestly don't have a problem with people reviewing the stories, but there is a proper etiquette the minions are expected to follow. No death threats, no telling the writer to quit. Don't tell the writer things ( Read more... )

You do have a point. But, so many times when I dare to look at reviews I am disheartened because people will give totally wrong reviews. I am not only talking about the flame reviews. I am talking about the fan girls that give glowing reviews to stories that are trash. I am talking about people who review just to say "continue please". I am talking about the people who review telling the author what pairings they should write.
None of these things are constructive and really the bad reviews make up the vast majority of reviews. :(. I doubt any budding author will learn much this way.

I've never told a writer to stop writing, though I have urged a few writers to delete stories. Vast majority of the time its because they've copied the original plot of something else. Other times it's been via PM after I've found out how "personal" said story is and explain to them about how some things are best left to oneself and not shared, also telling them I have my own stories that fall under this.

I saw the reviews. The first story the reviewer told them their writing style was garbage and that they should quit writing. The second one didn't tell them to quit writing but instead told the writer that their writing style was pathetic. Sorry, but there is a difference between telling someone that their story isn't good and telling using actual wording that tells the writer there is no hope for them to ever become a good writer.

I pretty much agree with everything everyone else on here says. People generally aren't born good writers, and if everyone tells them to stop writing... well, if they're sensitive enough to believe the flamer, they will. And their stories aren't going to get any better, because there won't be any stories. Taken to an extreme example, if all writers were sensitive in this regard, and if they were all flamed, then there wouldn't be any books. You could be convincing the next Ernest Hemingway or H.P. Lovecraft (or J.K. Rowling) not to write when you flame. In other words, don't flame. You've heard about that thing called constructive criticism, right? Use it.

Okay, I'm done ranting now. It was good to get that out though.
