There’s something which majorly bothered me about today’s entry. At the beginning of the story there is an author’s note which says the following. “From my reading, I have collected a select few Goblins that are just about perfect. Barchoke is Account Manager for House Potter. Bonequill is a Ledger Tender, and Gripsaq(Gripsack) is a Lawyer with a ( Read more... )

I'm Not Spam :( anonymous January 18 2022, 23:06:46 UTC
Not sure if this is going to post or not, since my last attempt was marked as spam. I don't know if that's automatically done by LJ, or if that's a subtle way of telling me to go away.

Anyway, if this does post: If I understand this correctly, Barchoke is a goblin OC that is being used uncredited in other works? Three isn't necessarily small potatoes if they're all the same character, so it must be from something well-known, yes?

I'm in the middle of studying for some state exams, so my one allowance for free time is checking out this blog. If I can manage some extra time, I'll see if I can't help ferret out the original. I don't know how much help I'll be though, as I've never spent much time on the Pit. They don't allow reader-inserts, so I take my stuff where it's welcome and wanted.

Best of luck, Pottersues!

If this also gets marked as spam, I guess I'll just not comment for a while and see if that helps.

Livejournal is weird sometimes. I wonder if Pottersues has been able to read your comments labelled as spam and can make these comments visible on their end? If you want to, you can create an account on here? You don't have to make it your pen name if you write on other sites, but it might be easier to get through Livejournal's weird spam filter if you have an account?

Sad to say Livejournal being rude is actually true. What really perplexes me is how I didn't see said comment in either my regular inbox or the suspicious messages box. If anon hadn't brought it up, I would have to have physically looked at either the comment section of the entry or at the calendar section which will indicate if there is a suspicious comment in the title.

I figured it was something like that, but I also realized that I'd been really chatty. Thank you for the suggestion of making an account. I suppose I could, but I have no need for a Livejournal outside of Pottersues, and the fact that the whole website is under Russian law makes me a little nervous because I don't know Russian law. Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me, though!

Apologies for that. I never know when LJ is going to decide to do that, but if a comment is marked as spam it's definitely an LJ thing. The strange thing is, normally the comments I see getting marked as spam are ones with links.

And yes. Barchoke is an uncredited OC. No, it's not just three stories. I've in fact found at least one more that's even older than the one I found. That story has over 3k reviews, 13k in favorites, and 5.5k in follows, while the other story for the same writer that used the same Goblin OC in has 29k in reviews/favorites and 18k in follows.

And that's not even accounting for the other Goblin OCs found in the story that I've not yet looked for.

That's so wild. I will admit, I've never written about goblins in part because I don't really understand how the names are put together. Come to think of it, I'd probably use a goblin name generator. There's got to be one of those, right?

Yes, there is. First Google result. I won't link it because of the chance of being marked as spam (I don't remember linking anything in that comment, but it's possible).

Anyway, could there be any chance that a lot of these people using the same goblin name did that, but didn't credit the generator for coming up with the name? I'd think that more likely than some goblin OC becoming super popular and well-known, but I don't read fan fics that tend to center on goblin OCs (such as inheritance fics), so it's possible that goblins in those stories have large enough parts to gain fans.
