As someone who suffers from depression, this is just offensive

A psychological study of any of these characters would be fascinating. This? This is just edginess for edginess' sake

Do you know what's really sad? This last month I actually called a writer out on this, and another reviewer came in and said any writer willing to tackle the subject should get a pat on the back, but pretty much cursed me out for being a hateful stranger.

The last time I reviewed a story a second time was back in July of 2016 when a writer I suspect to have been only 10 1/2 at the time who decided to claim they were getting "rude and demanding" reviews because they posted this to both of their stories, and made one of their reviewers on their second story think they'd done something wrong, so I clarified it had only been me, but legit critique and getting called out for the tantrum they threw in response. I also called them out for begging for reviews to make them feel better after the legit critique. They should be thirteen this next December, so I'll see if they return.

I feel that if the writer were to focus on one character instead of three, that maybe the story would have been better. Obviously, it isn't because of the content, but maybe the focus of one character would have just been better for this author ( ... )

Possibly. The problem is, I've seen writers derail canon characters without thinking of the why and how. The latest one I found is for a fandom where these topics are dealt with, which makes the way the writer handled the subject matter even more problematic, as each character coped in different ways. You've got to not just have that valid point, but show the emotional decay of the character, rather than telling the writer. So, if one thinks about it, they could have explored all three had they done that.

"They didn't understand, didn't get it, didn't know what it was like to lose yourself." So edgy, you can cut yourself with that phrase alone (too much?).

Holy crap this fic is really bad, like goth dark poetry level of bad. I'm getting flashbacks of the early 2000s. I'm surprised people write like this anymore.

That was my first thought when I saw this: We're back to 2005!

I seriously don't think the author handled the subject of depression and self-harm well at all. My advice would always be, 'don't' if you're not sure you absolutely know what you're doing where something this serious is concerned. YMMV, but that's how I feel about it.

^ This.

Writers shouldn't get pats on the back for simply handling the subject matter. That's ludicrous, yet I reviewed one of these fics and a reviewer attempted to lambaste me for calling the writer out.
