4160: Hidden - Aurora and Cassandra Enigme/Riddle

Nov 05, 2017 20:32

While yesterday’s entry was Toxic, I still loved how classic the Mary Sue was, but also how the writer’s story had a uniqueness and freshness to it that I liked. When I looked at the profile, this one also jumped out at me.

Connection to Canon: Instead of having one child, there are two, but who their mother is is unknown. Despite being Riddles, they’re confused when Hagrid refers to them as this. They happen to be in awe that wizards and witches exist, but have some confusion as well. Turns out this Melly is their mother “Out all of you, now. I will not have my daughter being influenced and intimidated by freaks!” Only, I then realize she’s talking about a third character, named Eliza. They have to say goodbye, because they’re getting kicked out of the house. There’s a lot of pop references to witch fiction, like the Wizard of Oz. They get to meet Scorpius in their second story. One’s in Ravenclaw, the other Slytherin. The plot is - so you know how a lot of OC stories are heavy on the lack of plot. Well, this story actually has plot, character development, and I found myself drawn into the story. There’s realistic conflict. Mind you, it’s got issues, as the writer’s rather new to writing, but this one I’ve got to - despite the fact these are the daughters of Voldemort - give an okay rating. Particularly since them being Voldemort’s daughters isn’t in your face like others, and can be ignored. Also, this is some of the best next-generation OCs I’ve seen.
Origin: The writer is doing a daughter of Riddle story. Says the twins to Eliza, “Well, once upon a time there was a very pretty fairy called Eleanor, who loved everyone and everything. One day, she saw a very handsome prince called Chaarles. They got married and had loads of children and great-grandchildren, and great-great-great grandchildren and great […] Then one of their descendants called Thomas was a male fairy, and he met a very beautiful and very clever princess, and they had two daughters, called Cassandra and Aurora Riddle, who were hidden in the human world until they were old enough to go to fairy school, but since their fairy names weren’t human names, they decided to call themselves Enigme. And that’s us. And one day, you’ll be old enough to go aswell.” That’s actually kind of cute, particularly when I know they made it up on the fly for their foster sister, or who I assume is their foster sister.
Special Abilities:  The girls kind of know a little to much to have, say come up with their imaginary origin story.

Notes: I think this fic highlights what I liked about yesterday’s story by the same author. They’re not a bad writer, but definitely still learning what works and what works. Their stories are quite enjoyable. This one in particular, well, we typically don’t end up with very believable Voldemort’s daughter’s stories. While I have issues believing that they’re Riddle’s daughters, they are very believable characters. And unlike yesterday’s which had some believability issues that stood out, that believability issue didn’t stand out much to me, particularly in comparison.

Sample:

In the early hours of the morning Cassandra and Aurora were awoken by around a hundred owls pecking on their arms, faces and legs. It wasn't a particularly nice beginning to the morning, but at least they were awake. On Cassandra's alarm clock it read 1:00am so she and Aurora tried to get some sleep. Around half an hour later there was a knock on the door, but of course no one answered, they were either too tired or even possibly sleeping to answer, or else they thought it was probably a prank caller. What person in their right mind visits someone at half one in the morning? It was just too bizarre to think about. Then came an almighty bang that shook the whole house and finally silence fell, though the sound was still ringing in Cassie's ears.

Then a loud booming voice rang out,

"Where's Riddle?"

Cassie looked at Aurora, her eyes wide with terror. For some reason they felt like they had to speak to whoever the voice belonged to. They ran down the stairs two at a time and came to an abrupt stop at the bottom. There standing in front of them was the largest man they had ever seen in their entire lives. He was three times the size of Cassandra and Aurora standing on each others heads and twice as wide as them standing shoulder to shoulder. He had dark beady eyes and a dirty grey beard that was twice as long as Aurora's hair.

"Are you two the Riddles?" the giant asked again.

"N-n-no," stammered Aurora. "I'm Cassandra Enigme and this is my sister Aurora."

Cassandra looked too shocked and frightened to speak or move, and just stood there with her mouth wide open gaping at this enormous man.

"What's all this commotion down here. And who on earth are you?" Melly asked the giant, eying him with distaste.

"Rubeus Hagrid. Gamekeeper of Hogwarts and Care of Magical Creatures professor. And as for you two girls, I think you should be the ones asking me who you are. Your name isn't Enigme. You are Aurora and Cassandra Riddle and you are both pure-blood witches. Well, half-blood really, but I think it would be better to keep it as pure-blood, yer daddy might be getting upset then, and we don't want that do we."

Finally, after several minutes of silence Aurora spoke up,

"How can we be, witches don't exist. And even if they did, we aren't evil and we haven't got green skin or a wand or broomstick or a pointy hat either!"

"Or a bubble!" Cassandra added in.
