RE: Termination of assignment

Dec 22, 2006 20:31

Hello! How are you? I am fine.

Oh, dear! LJ has changed its posting layout. I'm all confused. I hate it when things that were fine in the first place get updated with features nobody really cares about, ie. MSN Messenger. Oh, sorry. "Windows Live Messenger."

Significantly, I quit my job today. Coincidentally, shortly after I'd quit I got an offer for a part in a film which I'd auditioned for a couple of weeks ago. But I'll get back to that. When I knew I was going to quit, I checked my contract for the 'termination' clause. It said, and I quote verbatim: "9.1 The Temporary or Consultant may, without prior notice or liability, terminate the assignment at any time." Basically, I could just call them up and quit, which is exactly what I did. I left a message with one of the other consultants, and as I was in the post office this morning, one called me up and scolded me, saying I couldn't just quit without giving notice. When I quoted the above clause and said that I'd fulfilled my contractual obligations, she reluctantly accepted and mumbled something about 'business standards', and then threatened me with getting my come-uppance. (Ironically, one of her arguments was that I was leaving them over the busy Christmas period. What she must not realise is that transport shuts down over Christmas. The silly bitch. And anyway, as if I am going to have sympathy for a company so vulgar and horrible to work for as TfL.) I've been feeling slightly unsettled since the call, and as it turns out, unfortunately on the phone I am not as righteous as I would like to consider myself.

As I mentioned above, I got an email from a company making a low-budget feature called 'Anaphylaxis', which I auditioned for a couple of weeks ago. They have offered me a non-principal, supporting role. Given my state of travel and upheaval, I don't know whether I can commit to the filming schedule. Perhaps I should read the script and find out how big the part is, if it's worth it, and decide. What do you think?

Today I reneged on my no-spending policy and purchased a nice white button-up shirt that I'll be able to wear about and look respectable. I also bought the new (by which I mean, most recent) Cat Power CD, The Greatest, off iTunes. It's my way of saying Merry Christmas to myself. Also, while shopping on Oxford St, I found a collection of beautifully packaged (for Japan) Kate Bush CDs. Had I not already owned the albums, I probably would have caved and bought them.

Tomorrow I am off to Edinburgh, where I will spend Christmas. I'm taking the bus, which is a very long trip, but I'm hoping that I'll get to see a lot of countryside. There's no place I like travelling by land more than England. I love looking out the window and pretending I'm on my way to meet Oscar Wilde or someone else sexily clever and English. Ahh, so anyway my mum has booked me in for a Christmas lunch at a pub in Edinburgh. I feel bad about not being able to be with my family for Christmas, I think they are really sad that I'm not there with them. Anyway, as this will likely be my last update before Christmas, I hope yours are merry and hot. I love Australian Christmases: coke (and slipping in alcohol when the grown-ups aren't looking), roasts, chocolate, seeing all my cousins, and laughing at my grandma's inability to buy me a present that isn't a fantasy novel, haha. When I get back (I hope it's still hot) we'll go to the beach and have a good time.

Love,
Dave xo
