Ginny kept her wand up in front of her face as she negotiated the corridors through the darkness. “Pig,” she called out softly. “Where are you?” Ron would never forgive her if she didn’t find his blasted owl, so here she was in the wee hours of the morning near the Owlery, trying to find the little bugger. Ginny knew she should have asked Ron before borrowing Pig, but she didn’t want him asking inevitable questions, such as who she was owling. She could have just used a school owl, but Pig was reliable.

Unfortunately, when she’d tied the letter onto Pig’s leg and waited for him to leave, she’d watched in muted horror as he instead swooped through the open door and down the corridor, into the castle.

“Pig!” she called as loudly as she dared. “Where the bloody hell are you?”

“What are you doing here, Weasley?”

Ginny jumped and let out a small scream, her hand flying up to her chest as her heart beat wildly. “Who’s there?”

“Lumos,” the person said, stepping into the light. Draco Malfoy.

“Malfoy,” Ginny hissed. “What are you doing skulking about, scaring people?”

“I asked you a question first,” came the cold reply, “and don’t you dare question me. I’m Head Boy, I don’t answer to you.”

Ginny bristled at being spoken to like a recalcitrant child and drew herself up to her full height. “I don’t care who you are, Malfoy. You still don’t have the right to be sneaking up on people.”

“I wasn’t sneaking up on anyone, Weasley,” Draco drawled, leaning closer to her. “I have every right to be here. You don’t. So explain yourself.”

Ginny tucked her wand away crossed her arms over her chest. “No.”

Draco’s face changed, clearly taken aback at not getting the correct answer. “You either tell me why you’re here or I’ll take fifty points from Gryffindor.”

Ginny gasped. “You can’t do that!”

“Try me.”

Realising that she needed to be the mature one in this encounter, Ginny unfolded her arms and looked him straight in the eye. “I’m looking for my owl.”

“I didn’t know Weasleys could afford an owl,” Draco scoffed.

Ginny narrowed her eyes at him. She was not going to be baited by this horrible, nasty prat, so she strode past him, making sure she hit him hard with her shoulder as she went.

Before she knew what was happening, he had her pinned against the wall with his body. He muttered something under his breath and his wand hovered next to them in the air, giving them enough light to see each other. “Don’t you dare walk away from me, Weasley,” Draco hissed.

He was gripping her arms with enough force to bruise and his body was crushing the air from her lungs. “Get off me, you jerk,” she half growled, half panted. “I can’t breathe!”

Draco moved back just enough to allow her to breathe, but kept his tight grip on her arms. “You’ve got five seconds to explain yourself or Gryffindor loses one hundred points and you get detention.”

Ginny knew he was perfectly serious, and since she was eager to get as far away from him as possible, she answered. “I was sending my owl out and instead of going up, he came out the door into the castle. I was just trying to find him.”

“It’s two o’clock in the morning. You’re supposed to be in bed. Fifty points from Gryffindor for being out of bounds.”

Sixteen years of growing up with six brothers meant that Ginny was able to stand up to bullies. “Fuck you,” she hissed, knowing her mother would box her ears if she heard her utter such language.

“Why, you little... ” Draco trailed off, letting her go in disbelief. He stared at her for a few seconds, his body still blocking her from moving. “Right, that’s it.”

“What’s-- ” Before Ginny could finish her sentence, Draco had grabbed the back of her head and crushed his lips against hers. There was nothing remotely romantic or sweet about his kiss; he was trying to hurt her. His tongue slid into her open mouth and Ginny’s mind swirled, unable to cope with the feel of him around her. She did nothing for a few moments, startled by what was happening, but then she reacted, kissing him back and running her tongue over his, grasping the back of his robes. She could give as good as she got, and Draco Malfoy was not going to get the upper hand.

He pulled back, sucking in air, and stared at her as they both tried to catch their breaths. “Why didn’t you push me away?” he asked, unable to keep the note of incredulousness out of his voice.

Ginny’s eyes were wide and round, brown meeting grey. “I don’t know,” she finally answered as her brain tried to find the answer.

Draco’s face was unreadable. He brought a hand up to her face and Ginny flinched slightly, thinking he was going to slap her, but instead he cupped her cheek, running his thumb along her bottom lip softly. “I... I...” Finally, he appeared to give up trying to speak, and instead slowly leaned in, giving Ginny enough time to push him away. When she didn’t, he took her mouth again, but this kiss was nothing like the first one. His lips moved softly against hers, exuding gentle pressure, and he made no move to deepen the kiss until Ginny opened her mouth under his, boldly sliding her tongue into his mouth. He groaned from deep within his throat, and Ginny wanted to smile. Instead, she pushed her body against his, clutching his shoulders and letting him take the lead. He backed her against the wall, his hand cushioning her head, and proceeded to kiss her senseless. When they finally separated, neither of them were able to speak. All they were capable of doing was staring into each other’s eyes.

“I’ll need to send more mail tomorrow!” Ginny blurted out, wondering why she was telling him that.

Draco studied her so intensely that Ginny felt herself blush. “Then I guess I’ll be doing rounds here again.” With that, he plucked his wand out of the air and disappeared into the darkness before Ginny could say another word.
