Hello readers and fellow H/G shippers!
It's my week to be the guest reccer at
hpgw_otp, so I'm providing all of you with eight of my favorite post-Hogwarts fics. Most of them are one-shots, as I am a known one-shot junkie, so I apologize for the lack of novel-length fics. However, I think most of you will enjoy what I've chosen, because the writers are just phenomenal.
1.
Masquerade by
_angels_touch_.Death is just another masks he wears, isn't it? It was hard choosing my favorite post-Hogwarts fic by this author; she's immensely talented and all of her fics blow me away. I chose Masquerade because I got goosebumps after reading it - I could feel Ginny's sorrow, her regret, and especially her anger that is hidden beneath everything else. This piece is truly excellent.
2.
Exile by
dress-without-sleeves. And love hurts, like white light that’s blinded her before she even knows what’s happening. This short, angsty one-shot really made me think about what could happen at the end of the HP series, and even though this particular outcome is highly unrealistic, it's still thought-provoking and interesting. It's horrifying, almost, reading through this piece, knowing what's happening yet wishing it wasn't.
3.
It's Always Been You by
SunDevil05. Two years after a fight that led to the end of their relationship, Ginny is happy and engaged and nothing could be better. That is until she runs into Harry at a friend's party that leaves her questioning her heart. This is a 14-chapter story that I absolutely fell in love with. The plot is a bit overused, but this writer's work is definitely worth a read. I love her characterizations, even if they aren't always 100% true to canon; she makes Harry/Ginny a remarkably romantic pairing, even though I've always viewed them as more of a darker ship. It's cute, fluffy, and perfect if you're in the mood for a lighthearted H/G fic.
4.
Pulse by
poseida9. His heart thumped beneath her hand and his heart was not at all the same as her heart, and she realized that this was not as simple as it seemed. I recently came across this author while browsing through
hpgw_ficafest, and I'm so glad I did! Every piece written by her is excellent, but I really liked this one-shot because of the central theme - life. It all comes back down to a pulse, a heartbeat, and that's what did it for me. I loved it.
5.
In Dreams by
Opalish. Ginny never regrets loving Harry. This author often puts more emotion than plot into her one-shots, and while some people find this irksome, I think this is what makes her stories so enjoyable to read. Every time I read a H/G story by her, I connect myself to Ginny and put myself in her shoes, imagining what it would be like to feel what she's experiencing. In Dreams is one of my favorites by her because it briefly shows the aftermath of war, and what it has done to Harry and Ginny's relationship.
6.
A Very Happy Birthday Indeed by
Opalish. It's Ginny's eighteenth birthday, and has Harry got a surprise for her! Of course, this being Harry, he gets it all wrong. Cute, fluffy, and a scene that'll make you squeal "awww", this is a humorous fic centering around Ginny's birthday. I love Opalish, and I had to recommend this story too because it's just so darn cute. There are slight mentions of slash, though, just to let you know.
7.
Sweet and Half-Forgotten by
She's a Star. I need you so much closer. While this one-shot takes place right before Bill & Fleur's wedding, I consider it post-Hogwarts since there is no indication of Harry returning to the school whatsoever. In the months since the release of HBP, I've come across many fics where Harry and Ginny "make up" at the wedding, but I don't think that'll happen in canon. And apparently, neither does this author. Instead, she offers readers a glimpse into Harry's internal struggles as he interacts with Ginny, forced to remain friendly when he wants there to be so much more.
8.
Truth by
dress-without-sleeves. He doesn't need her. I had to offer up another fic from dress-without-sleeves, because WOW she is just so talented. I envy her. Also set in the summer after HBP, this follows Harry as he tries to make himself believe that he's better off without Ginny, trying to rationalize his actions and behavior. It's honestly great, and was written as a companion piece to Opalish's
Need. So you should read that one too, because it's equally brilliant.
So there are my recommendations. I hope you enjoy reading them! :)
