I've had this written up since yesterday, and I forgot to post it. So here are the rules and prizes of the contest I'm hosting. This will be the last post from me for a few weeks, just so you know.
One-Shot Rules
- All entries must be at least 500 words in length.
- Any Harry Potter characters may be used, but no OC's (original characters) are allowed.
- The one-shot must be centered around a scene you think will happen in book seven. If you haven't read HBP yet, I suggest you do, so you can formulate some ideas.
- It can be any genre. Examples are romance, humor, angst, drama, mystery, or even general, with a bit of everything mixed in. Anything works!
- Make sure your stories contain proper grammar and spelling. I'd hate to read through entries with TeXt LiKe DiS or with words spelled wrong.
You will be judged on:
- Plot: You are writing this one-shot as if it were a scene from the seventh Harry Potter book. A decent plot must be present so I can understand what's going on.
- Characterization: The characters you use cannot be completely out of character. Here's an example for you. Say you decide to write the opening scene of book seven, and you use Draco as your main character. Don't start it off with him being overly nice and filled with remorse for his actions - it can progress to that point, of course, but if you start straight away with him being Mr. Nice Guy, that's just unrealistic. Please try to remain as true to canon as possible.
- Creativity: The more original and thought-out your ideas, the better. Anything's pretty original at this point, since HBP is still so new.
- Grammar/spelling/structure: Make sure your story flows nicely - transitions are your friend! Using spell check is also a good idea. Beta readers are great too, if you can find one.
Art Rules
- Entries can be drawn, painted, sketched, made using Photoshop/image editing programs, etc. You can even use those programs online where you can draw things - I don't know what it's called, but it's pretty nifty.
- Entries can be based on a scene you think will happen in the seventh book, or your favorite scene from HBP. Please specify what your scene represents, though, so I know.
- Any Harry Potter characters may be used - again, no original characters (OC's) may be used.
- If your entry is hand-drawn/painted/etc., and you need to scan it or take a picture of it in order for it to be submitted, please make sure that the copy is high-quality so it can be properly judged. Please save your images as a .jpg or .png file - .bmp files are not very good quality, and your entry will appear slightly distorted.
- Make sure that your final copy is polished and as neat as possible. Do not submit a rough first copy.
You will be judged on:
- The only thing you'll honestly be judged on is overall creativity and appearance. If it is a good representation of a scene in HBP or a possible scene from book seven, and it looks appealing, then you're set. :)
Prizes
House ties seemed to be a popular request, so each winner will receive at least one.
First prize: A Harry Potter "prize pack", which includes all four house ties, the 2006 Goblet of Fire wall calendar, a Harry Potter wall poster, a package of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, a package of Chocolate Frogs, a package of Harry Potter-themed pins (for messenger bags and the like), and a Harry Potter T-shirt of the winner's choice. In addition, if the winner chooses, she/he may also receive a signed manuscript of WHOSO.
Second prize: A house tie of the winner's choice, a package of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, a package of Chocolate Frogs, a package of Harry Potter-themed pins, and a Harry Potter wall poster.
Third prize: A house tie of the winner's choice, a package of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, and a package of Chocolate Frogs.
Luckily for me, the IMAX theatre in my school sells all of these products, and I get discounts on them, lol.
Privacy statement: If you are selected a winner, your personal address will be needed in order for you to receive your prize. No need to worry, I'm not some freaky Internet stalker - after I send out your prize, I will dispose of your address. I respect your privacy, and would never infringe upon it under any circumstances. Some of you may be a bit reluctant to give out that kind of personal information, and that is understandable - however, your information is safe in my hands, and I will not distribute it to anyone else.
All entries for the contest are due by November 1, 2005. Please send all entries to potterfreak16@gmail.com.
Winners will be announced on or around November 8, 2005. Prizes will be distributed by December 1, 2005.
I hope ALL OF YOU enter! Good luck!
