That's why they introduced themselves and became his friends and put their lives in danger. Because we all know how money hungry those two are.
Why do people use this excuse over and over again? I have seen it used so many times, Hermione and Ron couldn't be real friends because they just aren't cool enough.
So you know before Harry can blink Draco is knocking at his 'figurative' door wanting to be his friend. It was a mistake all these years, Draco is really a nice guy. Next thing he's inviting Harry home to meet his Mum and Dad.
All Gryffindors are really bastards, and Slytherin's have all been misunderstood.
Usually the start of the plot that leads to making Dumbledore the bad guy, and Snape/Slytherin/Voldemort the good guys.
Fine make these two bad guys but, why can't a more original plot be used, give Ron and Hermione, an actual reason to distance themselves from Harry. Not something as easy and baseless as they were paid.
