Which version? If it's the original, then Jack's in big trouble...

If his choice if life with Mary Sue or the blissful peace of eternal nothingness, I'm sure I know which way Jack would vote. For that matter, if it's a choice between life with Mary Sue and eternity in Hell, my vote goes the same way.

*imagines fire and brimstone raining down upon an armada of grinning Mary Sues*

You shouldn't elicit these kind of images. I have too vivid an imagination.

In the original, the mermaid kills her human husband then turns into a foam/air thingy. There are lots of them presumably trying to get to Heaven - they said that every time someone is sad, their journey gets longer.

No, she doesn't kill her husband. Her sisters cut off all their hair and trade it to the sea witch for a sharp knife to give her; the deal is that if she kills her beloved (who's about to marry (or maybe has just married) a foreign princess) she can go back to being a mermaid with a voice. She hovers over his bed for a bit agonizing, and then at dawn she throws the knife into the sea and dives after it. And then she's turned into the foam/air thingy for her virtue and gets the chance to eventually earn a soul by being good in some way I don't remember.

Wow, I didn't realize I remembered all that.

nope she WANTS to kill him when he's got married with another woman (because he thinks she's the woman who rescued him, being the dumbass that he is) and is sleeping with her. But when she sees them lying in bed, all peacefull and stuff, she puts the knife down, kisses him gently ( rolls eyes) and dies. (well, she turns into foam and stuff, but what's the difference)
