Your James is such an adorable blend of spiky and vulnerable. Right from the first para:
He eyes her for a long moment before addressing her, both in an effort to encourage her to loiter elsewhere and in an effort to determine the most appropriate way of addressing her.
And so polite with it :)

I love the way this builds, with little pauses that make him wonder if it's over, as the attempts to set hi up with someone get more and more outrageous, and threaten direr social/professional fallout. He's going to have to bed Jack, if only to save his reputation!

At least he did the sensible thing not acquiring irons. What would Groves have thought then?!?

But even while I'm giggling, you're breaking my heart for the poor commodore:
It's still hard for him to picture her except as part of a background against which Elizabeth shines.

It seems less like a pleasurable prospect than like a chore, which he supposes it is. He can't expect to stumble into a good match without any effort. It apparently takes being Turner to do that.
He doesn't make the effort that night to stop himself from thinking about Turner and Elizabeth together, as wrong as he knows it is; he's got to think about something.

Oh, James!

Then building to this:
In a way that James senses but doesn't understand, it would be a relief to finally break., and catch me if you can. It may be the best transition for CotBP James to DMC James I've read!

"Spiky and vulnerable" sounds about right.

At least he did the sensible thing not acquiring irons. What would Groves have thought then?!?

The mind boggles. Poor James!
