So elegiac and quietly wise!

Yes, a "death fic" certainly, and like Veronica, I approach those most gingerly; also agree with her the only way to "enjoy" them is if they are going on to something better; very 'Ghost and Mrs. Muir".

And this can be read easily as non-slash, it's simply two men discovering a respect and even a liking for each other long after the end of everything.

The restraint is the perfect tone, makes it both wistful and with an underlying tenderness that need not be sexual, in fact is far deeper and more profound a melancoly.

That Jack himself is not long destined to live wasn't exactly foreshadowed except in mood and his weariness, but it doesn't surprise either. In fact the story ends on a lightened heart.

James sees Will offering that day of life as a "reward" to James for saving Elizabeth and he sees Will's lingering youth and inexperience, but all that observation is from Norrington's pov. Will IS already the Captain and Calypso picked his destiny for good reasons.

though you may not have intended it so, I got the feeling while reading, that Will offered and specifically made James' companion be Jack because he figured Jack COULD open James up to the possibilities of life he'd either denied himself or been blind to. And for Jack, one last lovely day before the end.

For both men, a rare opportunity to live without their masks, for two lonely men to have congenial and ultimately caring company one more time.
