When: Monday afternoon-ish
Where: the lab cave
Summary: Maps and quail chicks.
Sakuno bit her lip as she looked at the piece of paper she’d scribbled Inui-sempai’s directions to his laboratory-cave on. She’d followed them as best she could but she still couldn’t help but feel like she’d gotten a little lost. It’d been a common problem she’d been having on this island but at least she’d finally get her hands on a map. No doubt having this map would help with that.
“Ano...” she murmured her hair caught on a branch. Sakuno stopped to untangle herself. “Oh, over there.” At least she’d gotten close. Walking up to the entrance of the cave, she called out. “Sempai?”
Inui turned off the blowtorch and lifted his welding mask. Ninety-three percent probability of female voice. Putting away the device, he pulled off his gloves. He walked out to the ledge of the cave and peered down. Interesting. The time he had estimated for her arrival was lengthened by ten minutes. Hmm, he really had thought she would have gotten better in the years since.
"Ryuuzaki Sakuno. How nice of you to come by." He lowered himself off the ledge and onto a platform to get him onto level ground. "I trust Oishi sent you along with a first aid kit, just in case."
“Hello,” she bowed in greeting. Sakuno nodded. “Oishi-sempai makes me take one whenever I leave.” She laughed and added, “he says something about it being just in case and for my own good.”
Sakuno pulled a twig out of her hair. When had that gotten there? Probably when she’d tripped over that tree root. “How have you been, sempai?”
Inui gave her the once over and nodded. "It was probably for the best. You, at any given time, have an eighty-two percent chance of getting lost which therefore increases your inclination for injury to seventy-six percent. Lowest threshold, of course."
He grinned, plucking one of the newly hatched quail chicks out of his pocket. How it got there, he had no idea. "Busy, as you can see," he said lifting the chick up. "Would you like to take care of one? We have quite a few, but if you do, I insist you sign a form promising not to let Momoshiro near it."
As soon as Sakuno saw the quail chick, her eyes lit up. “Aww,” she cooed, “it’s so cute.” About then, she processed the question and looked up at Inui, eyes wide. “Eh? Y-you’d really let me have one?” It looked so soft and fluffy. She immediately wanted to say ‘yes’ but she held back. She didn’t have her own place--she was still staying at the infirmary where Eiji-sempai’d taken her in. It seemed rude to just get a pet and expect to be allowed to have it, especially in a place like the infirmary where sick people were always coming and going. And Eiji-sempai’s rabbit had to stay outside. That meant Oishi-sempai probably wouldn’t let her have a quail chick inside either and it just seemed cruel to keep a baby outside.
“Ano...”
Another nod. "Doug and Skeeter had about fifteen chicks. There is a possibility that the last few eggs in the incubator will hatch soon. I've seen movement in them."
Inui pushed up his glasses and pulled out a notebook, flipping to a page near the back. "There is a ninety-three percent likelihood that you are being hesitant because you are unsure that Oishi will allow you to have a quail in the infirmary." He scribbled a note on the page. "Will you be staying with Tachibana in the near future or will you require a tent?"
Sakuno bit her lip again. She hadn’t really thought about a more permanent shelter. She knew she couldn’t stay in the infirmary forever but it was nice there. Safe. Comfortable. “I...ano, I...I’m not sure,” she admitted, looking at her feet. She’d been here for almost a month. This was something she should have had settled a long time ago.
Inui made another note and deposited the quail chick back into his pocket. Snapping the book closed, he tucked it into the other pocket on his lab coat and stepped backward on the platform. "Shall we head up?" he asked. "We can better figure out the logistics of your whereabouts if I look at the map."
“Ah, okay,” Sakuno nodded, following close behind. She’d never been here and had no idea what to expect. She couldn’t help but imagining it looking like the lab of a movie evil scientist, all scary and creepy looking. Sakuno shivered at the thought and shook her head, trying to clear away the images. Inui-sempai couldn’t be that bad. Could he?
Once she was safely on, Inui pulled the platform level to the ledge of the cave and winced the rope in place. He stepped off and motioned for her to follow him inside. He pulled the chick out and placed in a small pen along with the others that had not been claimed. "Where did I put them?" he asked himself as he rifled through a stack of notebooks, experiment notes, and loose pieces of paper. He pulled out a small stack. "Ah ha! Here we go."
Pulling one from the pile, he set it on a mostly empty portion of workspace. "The island map."
Sakuno had gotten distracted by the pen of quail chicks. “Aww, look at you all,” she said. “You’re so cute!” They all looked so soft and fluffy. She really wanted to reach and touch one but she stopped herself. These were Inui-sempai’s chicks. It wouldn’t be right to just reach in. And it’d probably upset them all to have a strange hand suddenly in their space.
Inui looked up from the map to see Sakuno paused over the pen. She reminded him, vaguely, of how Kaidoh acted when he thought no one was looking. "Go ahead, if you want," he said, pulling out his notebook to make observations.
“It’s okay?” she asked. Sakuno looked back at the pen, reaching tentatively towards one of the chicks. She hesitated for a moment, just before her hand actually reached the baby. “So soft.” Amazement filled her voice.
"It's fine. You can pick it up." Inui made another notation in the notebook and decided to go ahead with marking the chick's progress. Grabbing a small container of grubs, he dropped a few in front of the hungrier looking ones. "I'm sure if you live near the shelters or along one of the well-worn trails, you would not get lost nearly as often," he said writing down data.
Sakuno nodded. Inui-sempai was most likely right. “I’m not having too bad of a problem around them. It’s whenever I try to go somewhere else that I have problems.” She sighed. “Or I end up getting turned around somehow and going in circles.” She’d done that for her first few days before Kite-san had found her and helped her out. Looking at the chicks, she smiled again and gently picked up the one she’d been petting.
Inui watched and made notes. "Perhaps just stick to the beaten path for the time being until you become more familiar. If you must venture past, I highly recommend taking someone who is experienced with the island." There were still many unexplored areas and while walking in any direction could lead to the ocean, one who was so easily bad with directions... exploring shouldn't be done alone.
“You’re sweet,” Sakuno told the chick in her hands. “So friendly.” She looked over at Inui-sempai. “I’ll make sure to do that. Ano, it’s just...I feel bad about asking someone to help me out.” She lightly stroked the chick. “Everyone else just seems so busy with their own things and I don’t want to be a burden.” She felt like she was more confiding this all to the chick, half-forgetting that Inui-sempai was even there.
This was terribly informative. Inui stuck his pen inside the notebook and closed it, tucking it into his pocket again. "Ask Echizen or Kaidoh. I don't recommend Momoshiro. He is usually to busy yelling and screaming with Kamio to be of absolutely any use." He went back over to the workbench and slid the map off. Squatting down beside Sakuno, he picked up a quail and held it in the palm of his hand. "If you really want one, you could. I am eighty-three percent sure that one has taken to you."
“You think?” Sakuno looked at the chick in her hand. Maybe she could bring it up with Oishi-sempai. Or she could actually figure out where she was going to stay. She did kind of need a more permanent residence. Sakuno could only stay at the infirmary for so long.
“I haven’t really seen Kaidoh-sempai around here,” Sakuno added. “And Ryoma-kun seems kind of busy.” Though she definitely wouldn’t be asking Momoshiro-sempai. He was a bit loud and did seem to get into all kinds of arguments.
Inui nodded. "Oh, yes. See? It's falling asleep. It likes you. As for Kaidoh, he is usually doing three times the amount of training written on my data sheets and Echizen is always on the court." He was vaguely amused that she neglected to mention Momoshiro.
“He wasn’t there when I found the courts,” Sakuno replied. “But then, no one was.” She’d actually been a little surprised to see the completely empty tennis courts. “Need to talk to Fuji-sempai,” she murmured, stroking the quail chick. He’d requested to play a simple match against her and she’d agreed but that was as far as it had gotten. “And Oishi-sempai,” she added, eyes focused on the chick.
Only slightly surprising. "Napping, I suppose," Inui said. He wasn't quite sure what Fuji and Oishi had to do with any of it, but he chose not to press. He would find out one way or another. He held the map out for her. "I suggest making notations. It was how we created it in the first place. It also would help you get less lost."
Sakuno glanced at the chick she still held and then back at the map. “Oh,” she bit her lip, setting the chick back down in the pen. She didn’t want to. Looking back at Inui-sempai, she nodded, taking the map. “Thank you again.” She would definitely be making notes on this map. Anything to help her try and figure out this island.
Inui reached into the pen and plucked out the one Sakuno had been holding. Walking back to his work area, he tucked it into a makeshift cage along with some starter food and instructions. "Here you go," he said holding it out for her.
Sakuno’s eyes widened. “A-ano, but...” She really wanted to take the cage with the chick but she felt like she should ask if it was okay first. But she really did want the chick. It was so sweet. Folding the map and placing it in her backpack next to the first aid kit, she took the cage. Hopefully things would work out and Oishi-sempai wouldn’t be too upset. It wasn’t like the quail chick was huge and took up lots of room like Eiji-sempai’s rabbit.
"If Oishi gives you any trouble, tell him he can talk to me," Inui said with another adjustment to his glasses. He would be more than happy to discuss things over juice. He grinned at his plan for a moment. "That settles it then! I hope you come up with a good name for your quail. If you need anything, a new map or some Special Inui Aozu Deluxe juice, just let me know."
Sakuno looked at the chick and grinned. “I’ll definitely think up something,” she promised. Bowing, she added, “Thank you again for everything, Inui-sempai. You’ve been a big help already.” She wasn’t so sure she’d come back for any Inui juice but she’d definitely need to return with some sort of thank you gift.
"My pleasure," Inui said, leading her back to the platform. "Do take care of the chick and if you wouldn't mind keeping data on it, I would love to have it." He stepped on and waited for her to do the same.
Sakuno made sure she had a good hold on the makeshift cage before stepping onto the platform. “I promise I’ll take as good of care of it as I possibly can,” she told him, completely serious. “And I’ll be sure to come see if I need any help or if anything seems wrong.”
"Wonderful. I look forward to it," Inui replied, lowering them down to the ground. "And if you want to head back to the shelters or the Infirmary, head straight northeast." He pointed to the large tree with the airplane parts. "The path is just past the tree."
Stepping off the platform, Sakuno nodded. “Thank you,” she said, appreciating the directions back. She started walking in the direction he’d pointed, stopping when she’d reached the tree line and turning back. “I’ll make sure to visit you sometime soon.”
"The cave is always open," Inui shouted back with a wave. He raised the platform back up to the ledge of the cave and waited until she was out of sight to head back in.
