When: Christmas
Where: treehouse
Summary: Gift exchange + mistletoe.
Sanada carried the last box of his from the pre-holiday airdrop and set it a corner of the treehouse. Though it wasn't quite as grandiose as Kite's, the shelter was a far cry from the platform it used to be. At least the elements didn't get them quite as bad as they did in the beginning. He opened the last box and pulled out Yukimura's present, setting it aside. Sanada stacked up extra cushions and blankets and sat down on them, pulling the package over. Taking out his phone, he texted a quick "Are you done yet?" to Yukimura. Given all the training with Hiyoshi, it was a wonder they were setting time aside to exchange gifts. He put his phone aside and waited. Yukimura would find it eventually.
After letting Hiyoshi go early for Christmas, Yukimura used the odd hour of spare time to take a dip in the pool and simply be. He could hear his phone buzzing somewhere between the folds of his towel and his shirt, but he ignored it for the time being in favor of washing his hair. He had to get all of those split ends out after all.
Once he had finished, the former captain reached for his towel as he stepped out and watched as his phone tumbled out. Yukimura grabbed it quickly and flipped it out, a small smile spreading on his face as he read the message. He flipped it shut without replying. Surprises were more fun anyways.
After toweling off, he headed back for a quick change of clothes and to grab Sanada's present from under his bed. Yukimura made his way to the treehouse quickly and once he got close enough, ever so quietly made his way up the ladder.
"I hope you haven't been waiting too long," he said softly as he pulled himself onto the platform.
Either Yukimura was still training with Hiyoshi or had lost his phone again. Both were possibilities. Sanada took the opportunity and laid down on the cushions. He rested his hands underneath his head and meditated. He cracked an eye open when he heard a creak at the base of the treehouse. Once Yukimura's top half appeared, he sat up.
"Since I sent the text, but it's fine. I meditated," he said. "I figured you were still giving Hiyoshi the yips for Christmas."
"I think the island has been making me grow soft," Yukimura admitted with a small laugh as he took the spot next to Sanada. "I let him go early without any yips so he could enjoy his Christmas."
He turned the box over in his hands as he pondered what he had just said. Hiyoshi had earned his small treat though; something had to be said for the Hyoutei captain's dedication. "In all honesty," Yukimura admitted. "I was actually washing my hair...split ends you know."
Sanada snorted. "How generous of you," he quipped. No doubt Hiyoshi was going to monopolize Kirihara's off time. It was almost endearing. "I'm sure Akaya appreciates it."
He watched Yukimura turn the box. It was a small step short of shaking it to see what was inside. He hoped his mom had packed it tight enough to not make a sound. At Yukimura's explanation, he looked at wet locks and shook his head. "Prevention measures, of course."
"After all of the trauma we put him through, I thought it might be a nice...gift." Yukimura did not know how else to phrase it. Akaya was still an idiot, but at least he was their idiot, and Hiyoshi was not nearly as amusing as his own heir.
Taking his own present for Sanada, he placed it in front of his best friend. "Should we go at the same time or take turns?"
"I would have used reprieve," Sanada said, picking up his gift and setting it in his lap. Rikkai training was nothing to scoff at. Most breaks were only between activities or at the end of practice when it was time to go home. In rare instances did one's body give out.
"Same time," he replied, knowing that Yukimura was a bit impatient to know what was inside.
Nodding, Yukimura impatiently held his present in his lap. "On the count of three then?" Not waiting for Sanada's consent, he began to count down. "3...2....1..."
Then stopped as he gingerly tore away the wrapping paper and smiled as he stared down at one of the art books he had always saved for but always ended up spending his allowance on tennis gear instead. "This will definitely keep me busy for the next few months."
With the sound of Yukimura opening his present, Sanada began on his, carefully lifting the tape from the box and opening it. Something shiny caught his eye and he lifted the box flap. He pulled out a new machete, much nicer than the one he had been using over the past few months. He desperately wanted to test it out, but there was something else. He lifted it out of the box and pushed the cardboard aside. Apparently Yukimura had been listening to his desire to beat the shit out of something.
"You know me all too well," he said, unfolding the inflatable punching bag in front of him. It would so come in handy when he wasn't allowed to break someone's face.
"I thought it would be a good outlet for your aggression," Yukimura quipped as he watched him unwrap the presents. "Please, just do not go crazy with the machete. Mother nature would not appreciate it."
Yukimura was right, but there really wasn't much to use it on that was already dead. He'd figure out something, but right now he was drawing a blank. "I promise not to harm any living plants," he said, raising a hand in mock salute.
Chuckling, Yukimura reached over to push Sanada's hand down. "Good," he quipped as he dropped his hand. "There's something else I brought. Do you want it?"
Sanada lowered his hand and raised an eyebrow. Something else. He had absolutely no idea what Yukimura had brought along with the gift. He hadn't seen anything. "I do."
"You can't tease me," he quipped as he fished through the back pocket of his shorts and pulled out a sprig of the mistletoe that an anonymous person had put up all over the island. A cheesy thing to do, but Yukimura figured they could afford one cheesy moment or two with how often they fought. "I thought the treehouse could use a tiny touch of the holidays."
Mistletoe. Wonderful. Not that Sanada thought they needed the plant to kiss. "Do you plan on holding it or actually hanging it up somewhere?"
Eying the branch above Sanada's head, Yukimura stood up on his tip toes and fastened the mistletoe to it with the ribbon he had left attached. "There," he stepped back and eyed his handy work. It would do. "What do you think?"
Sanada didn't feel like answering. Instead, he grabbed Yukimura's hand and brought him crashing down onto the cushions so he could kiss him as forcibly as he could manage in their positions. It was the most he could do right now anyway.
Yukimura let out a tiny gasp as Sanada tugged him down and kissed the life out of him. At least, that seemed like what he was doing. Not that he minded as he threaded his hands in dark locks, pushing the hat out of the way, and tugged. Amazing how seven days could feel like an eternity....they were terrible friends.
When they finally parted, Yukimura smiled and nuzzled his cheek. "Merry Christmas Genichirou."
Sanada hummed. His lips felt swollen and bruised. No doubt Yukimura's looked and felt the same. He wrapped his arms around Yukimura's waist. Sure, he had to wait one more week, but tonight made it all the more worth it.
"Happy Christmas, Seiichi," he said, tilting his head again to kiss Yukimura softly.
Smiling into the kiss, Yukimura curled against Sanada's body as they kissed slowly. They really were the worst friends in the world, but he found himself hardly caring. They were getting along for once; a Christmas miracle indeed.
