Summary: An interview
He was nervous. Of course Hiyoshi would be hard pressed to admit it but meeting Rikkai’s infamous captain for ‘tea’ had him really quite nervous. They hadn’t really spoken since Hiyoshi had somehow drawn the so called Child of God’s attention enough to be granted a match - one that had left him insensible and in his sempai’s tender mercies for almost a day. Obviously that was not a memory he was particularly fond of or had any desire to repeat any time soon.
Now however it wasn’t tennis that had brought him into the focus of Yukimura’s attention and so it could only be one other thing. A messy haired, loudmouthed, snobby, arrogant something that Hiyoshi still couldn’t quite understand his attraction to.
Apprehensive as he was, Hiyoshi could also understand the reason why the Rikkai captain had ordered him to come see him and in a way he was even glad that he had. For a few days he had already been considering how to approach Rikkai’s ruler and not only inform him of the...thing between him and the older boy’s disciple but also to declare his intentions and hopefully receive his permission to see Akaya. It was bad enough that his own captain seemed hell bent on opposing his choice - with both of them against it it would much more difficult; especially since Kirihara seemed to care a lot more about what Yukimura thought than he did with Atobe. Not that he didn’t respect his captain - but their hunting expedition had brought the value he that he held Atobe’s opinion on most things on to a new low. He was himself and Tezuka was Tezuka and if all Atobe had to offer him was - be more like Tezuka - then he’d heard enough of that to last him a life time and beyond.
But now really wasn’t the time to sulk about his captain’s pronounced lack of interest in anything that wasn’t either Tezuka or Seigaku’s Fuji. He was here to try and make a good impression - assure Yukimura that he wasn’t just after some quick fun - they’d already done that, and hopefully receive something not quite unlike his blessing.
Hiyoshi took a deep breath, made sure his bowl cut was as neat as possible considering how long it had been since his last haircut and brushed through the last of the underbrush to meet Yukimura as requested.
Yukimura settled himself comfortably on the blanket while he waited for Hiyoshi. The tea pot sat steaming on a small fire an arm’s length away, two cups waiting eagerly to be filled. He had also pulled some fruit in case Hiyoshi was in the mood for some food. Yukimura had a general idea that would not be the case, but one never knew.
As soon as he heard rustling, he propped himself up on his elbows and smiled at his guest. “Welcome,” he greeted warmly. “I’m glad you could make it.”
A curt nod in greeting - not because he was intending to be disrespectful, far from it, but Hiyoshi simply liked to keep formalities short and to the point - and Hiyoshi walked over to Yukimura’s blanket, hesitating at the edge before sitting down in a somewhat awkward tangle of bony knees and sharp elbows. “Thank you for your invitation Yukimura-san.” Even if they both knew that it wasn’t as much of an invitation as an order. “I’m glad you could make the time to see me.”
Yukimura smiled as Hiyoshi awkwardly huddled himself at the edge of the blanket. “Of course,” he replied softly. He reached for two mugs and poured them both a generous helping before handing one off to his guest. “You do not have to be so careful,” he teased. “My methods are not nearly as terrifying as Genichirou’s.”
Accepting the mug with a nod, Hiyoshi observed Yukimura over the rim of it. “I’m not scared of you.” It was probably rude but then many on the Hyotei team could vouch for that being simply the way he rolled. “Or Sanada-san.” A little cautious maybe, but not afraid. “”I merely....” Allowing his eyes to drift away from Yukimura’s pale face, Hiyoshi frowned deeply at his cup as he tried to find the right words. “I merely don’t wish to offend you.” he finally settled on. “I know there has always been a certain tension between Rikkai and Hyotei, but I was hoping that concerning this matter you might consider me as somebody with a private interest that is not connected to which school I attend.” He mentally cursed the stilted language he had inadvertently slipped into. “I assume you know which matter I speak of.”
Yukimura sipped thoughtfully at his tea as Hiyoshi rambled. Atobe’s successor had managed to hit the nail on the head. He did not want anyone simply using his new captain as a way to thwart Rikkai’s inevitable assent to nationals.
“He is the reason we’re chatting is he not?” Yukimura asked, finally putting his mug down and looking straight at Hiyoshi. “Tell me more about your interest.”
“I would like your permission to ask Akaya out.” Having blurted it out, Hiyoshi rocked back and gathered himself by sipping at his own tea for a moment. “I like him....” He offered after a moment, kicking himself for sounding so lame when talking to Yukimura, one of the most renowned players and captains on the Highschool circuit. “And ..I feel it is the next step to attempt for us to date officially.” Hiyoshi’s cup was rotated slowly as he waited for Yukimura’s reply.
Yukimura bit his lip to attempt to refrain from laughing. Hiyoshi was asking his permission. The old-fashionedness of the entire conversation reminded him so much of Genichirou. No wonder Kirihara liked him so much. Genichirou had even rocked the bowl cut at one point in time.
Nodding that he had heard Hiyoshi, Yukimura took his time in answering. “I think....” he picked up his tea again and took a sip. “You two could be good for each other.”
“I...” Ready to argue his point Hiyoshi had to do a double-take at Yukimura’s words. “..really?” He asked, looking surprised for moment. “I mean...how so?” Maybe they were good together but he hadn’t thought of being good for each other. Generally Kirihara tended to irritate him to a degree, even when being cute - or every now and then sexy. “Do you mean in tennis?” He hazarded a cautious guess, well aware that Kirihara was his better 99% of the time.
“You are both filling the shoes of two people who were far more charismatic than either of you.” It was as close to a compliment of Atobe as he would get. Ever. As for himself, it could be seen as almost egotistical, but it was the truth. Akaya lacked that certain ability to make one of his regulars run fifty laps with just a smile. “It must be difficult.”
Yukimura look a long sip of his tea, lavender eyes always watching the young captain. “And as for the tennis, Akaya will always be better than you. Your training program is atrocious,” he stated matter of factly. “So perhaps he can push you so Rikkai has more competition, and you in return, have the patience his temper lacks.” Long fingers hooked into the handle of the mug and tapped idly against the ceramic.
“Although that rubbing off on him is perhaps no more than wishful thinking.”
As much as he would have liked to object, Hiyoshi had to admit that Yukimura was right and they both knew it too. It was difficult - though if that was the criteria for potential boyfriends it would include Fudomine’s Kamio just as much as Seigaku’s Kaidoh. They all had large footprints to fill. As for his patience rubbing off on Kirihara... “I suppose we can try, but I’d imagine a good vice-captain would be more effective.” Not that it would keep them from well rubbing against each other by all means. Hiyoshi blushed ever so slightly, his ears turning red. “I’m going to make sure Hyotei will be more than just a challenge to Rikkai when I get back.”
Noting the way Hiyoshi blushed, Yukimura groaned inwardly. He did not want to know about any of Akaya’s ‘rubbing’ activities at all. “I’m sure they won’t be,” the former buchou replied as he stretched his legs out on the blanket. “And I would hate to think that you would use this relationship as an opportunity to weaken us.”
He put his mug down as well and stretched his arms above his head, completely relaxed. “I gave you my approval, but should you do anything that makes me think you are less than genuine...” Yukimura smiled though his eyes were suddenly very cold. “We won’t even have to go there will we Hiyoshi-kun?”
Weaken Rikkai? Had Yukimura’s suddenly cold gaze not sent a warning shiver down his spine Hiyoshi would have been tempted to roll his eyes at that. “I’m not with Akaya because of tennis.” He archly informed the other boy instead. “And I would never use a tactic like that - we either win by skill or we don’t deserve to win at all.” Draining the rest of his tea he put the cup down and climbed to his feet. “But I think we have both said everything that needed to be said so I will be taking my leave now.” He bowed gracefully. “Thank you for your time Yukimura-san.”
Yukimura watched Hiyoshi stand up and did the same, brushing the sand off of his shorts in the process. “There is one more thing Hiyoshi-kun,” he stated softly. He had heard that Hyoutei liked to ‘rub’ each other a lot, and needless to say, he did not want Akaya to obtain any such things. “I expect you to be safe.” Yukimura did not want to go any further in depth than that. “Do I make myself perfectly clear?”
Safe...? Hiyoshi blinked at Yukimura’s grave words, puzzled for a moment. As far as he knew the most dangerous hobby Kirihara had was playing tennis - though he wouldn’t put it past the other boy to do something reckless like cliff diving or something ridiculous like that. “I’ll keep an eye on him?” He offered, hoping to assuage Yukimura’s concern with it.
Sighing, Yukimura pushed a hand through his hair. Apparently he had to spell it out. “Sex Hiyoshi,” he simply said. “Now are we clear?”
Oh....oh! As the meaning sank in Hiyoshi turned a mortified shade of delicate pink. “Of course...I mean we haven’t..and I’m not ...and he...” He sputtered before finally giving up and just nodding, the shaggy fringe of his bowlcut falling over his eyes. “Yes Yukimura-san.”
“Then you can go,” Yukimura replied with a nod. Hiyoshi had passed....so far anyways. “I’ll see you at family dinner.”
The family dinner, another test he would have to pass, only this time with added grumpy vice-captains and swords, Hiyoshi assumed and nodded. “I’ll be there.” He assured Yukimura, inclining his head in another bow before turning to leave - glad to be able to do it under his own power this time.
