It was still Sunday night and only a day since Yukimura had been hospitalised, but it him it already felt so long. Just because he spent a year in a hospital before and had experience in sitting about, it didn't make it any easier. He asked Renji to go and look after Balotat and sleep at home since he spent the night on a chair, he had to go to school as well. The team needed someone there, and since Sanada was away. But as Yukimura sat on his bed, watching the night sky, he couldn't help that feeling of being doomed again. His doctor had just left, and now there was nothing for him to do but accept it.
The trip had taken too damn long. He hadn't been able to get a direct flight back to Tokyo on such short notice and had ended up with a layover in both Bejing and Seoul, then when he'd finally arrived his train back to Yokohama had been delayed by some moron deciding that it was a good time to commit suicide in front of one of the speeding vehicles.
By the time Sanada arrived in the hospital, the visiting hours were long over, but that wasn't something that had ever stopped Sanada before and he was fairly certain the hospital knew as soon as Yukimura came back that he would soon be following.
"Sir, I'm sorry but visiting hours are over..." A well meaning nurse said soothingly, noticing the, for once, obvious look of panic on Sanada's face. It was a shame Sanada was not a gentleman when he was scared. He sent the girl running off in tears and soon one of the familiar nurses was out to deal with him.
"Genichirou....he's over here...." She said gently, making sure not to touch him, and just led him toward the room, "Remember though, you have to be quiet at night." Sanada took a few deep soothing breathes, trying not to freak out as he walked the familiar halls of the building he hated more than anything. He'd rather spend the rest of his life in a damn plane then spend one more night in a hospital, but there was no way he was leaving Yukimura alone in there again. She knocked on Yukimura's door lightly before sliding it open, "Seiichi-kun....You have a visitor." She smiled.
Yukimura had heard Sanada's voice through the closed door when he yelled at a nurse and he hoped he was right. It was fine to be there alone during the night, he didn't care so much, but he wanted to see him.. just for a little while. His hear turned to the door even before the knock. Giving the nurse a nod and a smile, Yukimura sighed deeply, his heart beating a little fast for some reason, shifting on his bed to sit with the legs hanging from the edge. "Sanada..." he said quietly as the other teen walked in.
An odd feeling filled his chest when he saw Yukimura sitting there and he stepped inside slowly, his feet feeling like they were made of led. The nurse slid the door closed with a small smile and Sanada felt his heart ache painfully.
"Yukimura..." He murmured and slowly moved closer to the bed, his duffle bag dropping to the floor in a rather careless manner, "I'm so sorry I'm late...." He murmured, voice nearly cracking.
The younger teen shook his head, keeping his brave face. He wanted to throw his arms around him and let all that anger, frustration and fear pour out of him, but he couldn't, not with Sanada looking like he was about to do the same. "It's alright, Sanada... " Yukimura said in a soft tone, watching his boyfriend carefully, "... you shouldn't even better." But he was glad he came, just by him standing there Yukimura felt a little stronger.
Walking over to the bed, Sanada sat beside Yukimura and wrapped his arms around him, "It's ok.....it will be ok...." He murmured and held Yukimura close to him gently, knowing exactly what the other wanted to do. He wanted to do the same, but he wouldn't, not yet, not until his boyfriend gave in. He had no right to.
At first, Yukimura did nothing. He let Sanada hold him for a while, simply closing his eyes, even his arms stayed where they were. "Hm..." he sounded, wanting to say something, to agree with him, but they didn't know that yet and Yukimura was trying to be realistic. But that short moment passed, and he couldn't keep himself from holding Sanada back, his finger tightening around the fabric of his top as he burying his face on his shoulder. "I know..." he replied bravely, but his tone was weak and shaky and he knew if he kept talking he would breakdown so he stopped.
Sanada rubbed Yukimura's back gently, being the rock that he needed to be for his lover. He wanted to tell him to let go, to give in and cry, but he knew better. Yukimura would break down when he was ready and not a minute sooner, so he just stayed there silently and held him.
The younger teen stayed there silent after that, but his mind was going through hell with 'what ifs', doubts and fears. If his illness was back again, which it was, then how could they go through it once more? What if it got worse? He wasn't certain he could do it, he wasn't certain Sanada, Renji and everyone else could do it either. Now, different from before, he also felt guilty... he shouldn't have agreed to being in a relationship, he wasn't healthy enough, he would only cause more grief to the two people he loved the most. It had been hard enough as friends. As his mind took that line of though, Yukimura's eyes went teary. "Sanada..." he started again, breaking the silence with a pained whisper, "... i'm sorry..."
"You have no reason to be..." He murmured reassuringly and kissed the side of the blunette's head, "None at all...." The other couldn't control the damn disease and he had no idea it would ever come back. He just wished he could have been there to help. He'd failed as boyfriend to Yukmura
Pulling back, Yukimura looked down, thoughtful. "I'm sorry for putting you through this again." He was trying to control his tears, and even though his hair was covering most of his face, they still dropped down his cheek, falling only his hands that now laid on his lap. "It's back... I thought i was overreating, but I wish i was. My doctor said I must have caught some form of virus while we were away and it triggered the relapse." He turned to his boyfriend, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand. "Ne, Sanada... why me? Why me again?"
He reached up to wipe gently at the tears with his thumb and cup his lover's cheek, wishing he had the answer, "I don't know..." Sanada murmured honestly and leaned in to press his forehead against Yukimura's gently, "But...you have no reason to apologize.....this isn't your fault....." He murmured and watched Yukimura, his eyes sincere and strong, even though he was scared to death. This time they were more prepared, they understood the disease more...they could beat it again...right?
Yukimura leaned into the touch ad as their forehead's met, his hands reached out and held onto his boyfriend's top again. "I do..." he said quietly, then his voice took a normal tone again, but his heart felt as if it was sinking into his stomach. "If I knew... I would have left you and Renji alone... you were fine without me... I..." finger tightened around the fabric again, "... I weak and ill and this will never change. I'm only going to bring you grief... and that's why.... that's why I'm sorry." By the end of his sentense, the younger teen was crying again, this time the tears wouldn't stop running, "I tried to be strong but my body won't let me."
He gently and carefully pulled his lover into his lap and held him close, letting him cry into his chest, "You are not weak.....you are the strongest person I know......and Renji and I are so happy to have you....." He assured quietly and kissed the side of Yukimura's head, "We've never second guessed that decision and we're not going to now or ever....."
"What's the point? I strong... I'm good at everything but then I had this ... I'm locked into a body that hates me." He was angry, and scared... it could he heard on his tone, and even if being on Sanada's lap make it a little more comforting, he was still under the effect of the drugs he had taken moments before him boyfriend arrived. So even his reasoning wasn't the best. "You are so stubborn.." the bluehead added once he calmed down a little. He couldn't do it without him, but that didn't change the fact that Yukimura thought Sanada was fool for sticking around. "You should have ran away when you had the change..." he turned his face and wiped his wet cheek on Sanada's chest. "I know you... I know what you are feeling right now."
Sanada was stubborn, but he was also patient and experienced with dealing with Yukimura on the drugs so he just listened silently until his lover had finished and then spoke quietly, "Ah....I'm very stubborn.....and.....if you know how I feel right now then I don't need to tell you that I'm terrified......that having to watch you go through this again is the hardest thing I've ever had to do and that I hate being powerless to do anything...." Yukimura had broke down, it was his turn...he just wouldn't allow himself to cry. Not yet. "I'm your fiancee......I'm supposed to protect you....and there's nothing I can do....."
There was nothing anyone could do. There was no protection against such thing. They both knew that and rationally, they should accept it, but it wasn't that easy. The bluehead pulled back a little, just enough to be able to look into Sanada's eyes, his hand reached out to touch the side of his face softly and he whispered. "Don't be scared, Sanada... " he bit down his bottom lip before smiling gently, but his eyes were still wet, "... you can do it. I can always pull through because of you... you're not powerless and you're protecting me right now."
He relaxed a little at the touch then leaned in to kiss Yukimura slowly. They supported eachother when they needed it the most and it was when their lips touched that Sanada realized that they could beat the disease again. The blunette was too strong to lose to something like that and he had support from two fiancee's who would do anything for him.
For some reason, he wasn't expecting the kiss so when it came Yukimura let out a quiet little moan, his eyes closed again and he let his weight rest a slightly against Sanada. He didn't have this last time and maybe the illness was a horrible thing they had to live with, but it would never be as bad. Now, more than ever, he had reasons to fight it, more than just tennis. " Ne..." he said as the kiss broke, "... tomorrow you have to tell the team than i'll be away from a while again." ... but tennis was never too far from his thoughts.
Sanada didn't let his lover move far from him when the kiss broke and watched him with a little smile, his boyfriend was still the same, no matter what, "Ah.....I'll make sure it's taken care of.....we'll take nationals again...." He kissed Yukimura's forehead and relaxed against him, "So focus on getting better again and leave the team to me for now...."
"I'll be back for the Nationals..." Yukimura assured him. It was his last chance to play with them, maybe he wouldn't make to Kantou, but the Nationals... he would be there no matter what. "It won't be the same. It doesn't feel the same... the pain..." maybe he was trying to convince himself, but it didn't matter, he wasn't really feeling much pain because of the drugs at that moment anyway, "... and I really want to be there, Sanada, I have to be there. Even if I'm still hurting." There was always a lingering pain, even after all those years, when Yukimura pushed too hard, his body would ache, but he never complained to anyone, or to himself.
"Ah...I know you will be...." He assured and prayed Yukimura was right about the pain and that this wouldn't be like last time, "Renji and I will be there with you...."
After that Yukimura gave a nod and leaned against his chest, closing his eyes, his arms tiredly wrapping around his boyfriend. "Sanada..." he sighed quietly, "... you don't need to wait until you are alone with Renji to let your feelings out. I can take it..."
"I'm alright..." He murmured and carefully laid Yukimura down then lie down beside him, "just.....let's rest....." Sanada ran his hand gently over Yukimuras body and held him close, wishing they could be at home or anywhere but in the damned hospital again.
The hospital wasn't comfortable but at least during all the tests and blood transfusion he would have to stay there. That hand felt nice. Amongst all that mess, he had forgotten how much he missed Sanada that week so he smiled, opening his eyes a little as he was held close. "Ne... you don't need to sleep here, Sanada. You just arrived, you won't rest at all. Maybe you should go home."
"I'm not going anywhere," He said stubbornly and kissed Yukimura's cheek, "I'm not leaving you in here alone..." He'd had to leave Yukimura alone too much when they were just friends, but now that they were engaged he was even more upset about leaving Yukimura at all. He didn't care if he didn't sleep for a month, for Yukimura he would do anything.
"Hm, you're being stubborn again." Yukimura smiled gently before rolling to his side to face him. "I'm fine, Sanada, I don't mind being alone. Knowing you are closer and I can call you is enough for me. But if you want to be like that, then you can take off your shoes. You're tired, you can share my bed with me, I don't need it all."
"I'm always stubborn," Sanada mumbled with a small smile and kicked off his shoes obidiently, "I don't want you being alone....even if you don't mind it......"
"You are... it's not a bad thing, if it makes you stay here with me." Yukimura smiled a little wider as he heard the shoes falling to the floor, then leaned a smalled kiss on Sanada's lips, touching his cheek softly with his fingertips, before sliding them down to his chin. "Hm... you need to shave."
Sanada chuckled quietly and closed his eyes, "Mm....Sorry....I'll shave tomorrow....." He reached up to touch his face and chuckled, he had a nice five o'clock shadow going, he probably looked rather rugged, "Unless you want me to keep it," He teased quietly.
The younger teen laughed a little, running his fingertips along his unshaven face. It felt funny against his skin, it wasn't all the time Sanada was allowed to have a little beard so he would take the opportunity to play with it. "Hm..." he smiled, "... I want you to keep it. But it has to be a full beard."
"A full beard?" He asked with a deep chuckle, "I'll look like my grandfather...." Sanada murmured and opened his eyes to look at his lover, "But...I don't mind trying to grow one...."
There was a moment of silence and then Yukimura, punched him gently on the chest. "I'm not serious, Sanada," he laughed ...quietly, they were in a hospital after all. "If you try to do that I'll shave you during the night, I swear."
Sanada laughed quietly as well and wrapped his arms around him, pulling him closer, "Maybe I should just have it like this for a while, try a new look," He teased quietly and smiled, happy to see Yukimura smiling and laughing.
"I see..." the smaller teen was happy to be closer and he kept touching Sanada's chin, smiling, forgetting at that moment about other things that trouble him, "... you want a more adventurous look. But you know, Sanada, if you are not careful you'll end up looking like a homeless man." he said before softly scratching his face, happily. "Hm, you look handsome either way... I'm a little jealous I can't grow one. Would you still love me if I had a beard?"
Smiling he kissed Yukimura's forehead, "I would still love you, but I think you would look very......odd with a beard, especially because it would be blue....." He chuckled and rubbed his lover's back, "Would you still love me if I look homeless....?" He said with a small smirk, already knowing the answer, but still wanting to hear it.
Yukimura's hand moved to cover his mouth to muff his laugh. Imagining himself with a beard was like looking at that icon Niou had done once that he hated so much because it looked disgusting. "Odd, Sanada? It would look really bad. You can be honest. What's the problem with the blue?" he touched the tip of his hair and pulled to the front. It was a nice shade, maybe not for a beard, but still. He let it go and put his arm around his finacee's neck. "Hm, probably" he replied, teasing and smiled. "I love you, i don't care how you look like.... but I would probably shower you and shave you."
"It would make a horrible beard," Sanada said with a little snort and kissed Yukimura's jawline, "And thank you...." He murmured affectionately and smiled.
The smaller teen kept touching Sanada's face gently, closing his eyes when the kiss came before rolling onto his back and tuning his face towards him. "Do you think they'll complain if you sleep with me?" Of course, he meant only sleeping with him on the bed but god knows how Sanada would take it.
"They know complaining doesn't do them any good by now..." Sanada murmured honestly, he'd stayed there plenty of nights the first time, because he'd been worried and he was big and mean enough that the nurses were too scared to argue anymore. The new ones would all learn soon enough as well. Sanada refused to be kept away from his fiancee.
"You are a troublemaker, Sanada" he teased, letting his hand slide down to find Sanada's and hold it somewhat weakly. He was getting tired. It had been a stressful day, full of tests and bad news and now on drugs, and with Sanada there, he could relax, so his body was giving in.
He wrapped his hand around Yukimura's and held it gently, but by no means weakly. He was the rock. He had to be, for Seiichi and for Renji. He couldn't let himself falter, so he just kissed Yukimura's foreead again and held him close, "Rest..." he murmured quietly.
With a little smile and a quiet sigh, he brought their hands to his chest and held them there. "Hm..." Yukimura sounded, more and more tired "...Sanada, don't leave me," were his last few words before drifting into sleep.
Never...." Sanada murmured and just held Yukimura close the rest of the night, too much on his mind to actually get any sleep himself.
