Somewhere along the line he had realized that this wasn't a good idea. Yes, he wanted to test his limits, and yes, testing his limits was a reason as good as any to go to the indoor pool in the school, daring himself out to the deeper parts of the pool, where his feet couldn't touch the floor anymore and his hydrophobia kicked in in overdrive. He felt like he was going to drown. Like the huge masses of water closed in on him and threatened to pull him down, like a heavy weight crushed his chest, keeping him from breathing at all. No... Obviously not a good idea. If this kept up and panic consumed him, he was rather sure he would drown, and that... Wasn't good. Which left only one thing to do. "HELP!"
Oishi had wanted to be more acquainted with the campus, so he'd taken to wandering around the various buildings, hoping to work out where everything was before people expected him to know. Today he'd found the building with the indoor pool. It was a well-kept, very large pool with more swimming lanes than he was used to. Still, it was nice to know that Evergreen had a pool, since Oishi did enjoy swimming quite a lot.
Though, it looked like today was a bad day for attempting, judging by the person he could see flailing in the water.
"Oh no!" Oishi hurriedly took off his sneakers and shirt, knowing they would only weigh him down and grabbed the lifesaver near the edge of the pool taking a deep, calming breath before diving into the water to reach the floundering person.
I'm going to die, the water's going to take me and then it'll be over... I wonder if I'm going to regret it? I wonder how it will feel like when I cross over. I wonder when someone will find me... As long as it isn't Yuuta...
Fuji's thoughts were cut of as he suddenly felt someone close to him, and his hands touched something, something afloat, something that could help keep him above water. "I... What... Wha...?"
"Keep a tight hold on this!" Oishi said loudly at the person he was helping, shoving the lifesaver into his arms," I'm going to swim us both back to the edge!"
So saying, Oishi pushed both the person and the raft in front of him and swam with his legs until they got to the edge of the pool. He quickly hoisted himself up and grabbed the other's arms to help him get on the dry surface and as far away from the water as he could get from one pull.
Fuji's senses was not all there yet, however, he fought against himself and the panic that lurked just underneath the surface - and oh, what a bad choice of words that was - and somehow managed to hoist himself onto dry ground, scraping his knees in the process. "I... You..."
Oishi was breathing heavily from adrenaline and exertion. He quickly bent down to check on the other... boy, he could tell now.
"Are you alright? Do you need medical attention? Can you breathe? Do you need any kind of help?" he said in a rush, looking for visible serious injuries. The scraped knees could wait. Oishi needed to make sure the boy wasn't in immediate danger.
Coughing a few times, Fuji fought for breath, and when the adrenaline slowly quieted down inside him, he sat up, shaking his head. "No... No, I'm all right, I think. Just lost a few years of my life, that's all." He offered the black haired boy a shaky smile.
Oishi smiled back in a hopefully reassuring manner. Besides the scrapes, he couldn't see any blood and not of the boy's limbs looked broken or injured.
"How's your breathing? Does your chest feel too tight? You might have inhaled some water while you were submerged,” Oishi put his hand on the other's back to feel him intake his breath when he noticed a pale line down the small of the other's back. The scar looked old and was probably not the cause of the drowning incident or caused by it, for that matter. Oishi still wanted to make sure.
"How did you end up in such deep water? Are you usually a good swimmer and something happened?"
"I..." Fuji shook his head, trying to block out the new wave of panic that surged through him - Don't touch me don't touch me don't touch me - and then tried his best to focus on the other boy. "I just wanted to see if I could do it, you know? Be out in the deep water. Obviously not..."
"You should probably be a little more careful when swimming, then, just in case," Oishi stood and held out his hand to help the other boy up.
"Can you stand?"
Fuji nodded, extending his hand and allowing the black haired one to help him to his feet. "I... Thank you. I... Guess I should go and rest for a bit now."
Oishi nodded," Rest is the best idea. Give yourself an hour or so to calm down, if you can." The other boy seemed steady on his feet, which was good.
"Shall I walk you back to the dorms? Or do you think you can make it?"
Fuji shook his head, giving the other boy a pale, but somewhat steady smile. "No, thank you. I'll be fine."
"Alright, if you're sure," Oishi smiled back at the boy with paler hair. He waved at the other as they exited the pool building, only then realizing that he hadn't even caught the other's name.
