Summary: It's White Day, and Renji has something special for An
An glanced up at the clock for what was probably the million-th time that day. It was nearing the end of the workday, and maybe soon she'd get some sort of answer to the puzzling note that had been left on her desk. She tried her best to concentrate and get her work done, but she kept finding her mind drifting. It all began when...
Stretching a little before sitting down at her desk, An got ready to start her day. By the time she had arrived, there were already small little gifts left for her at her desk from some of the co-workers she had given Valentine's chocolate to. She smiled as she read some of the cards, making a note to go and thank everyone for their consideration, before picking up the last gift on her desk: a single white rose. She smiled as she fingered the petals, somehow knowing without having to open the card that this particular gift was from Renji. Carefully sliding the envelope of the small notecard open, An took a seat in her chair.
Renji's note had told her to be patient, and to wait until the end of the day. This was far different from the notes he had left for some of the others, which had simply said 'Happy White Day' on them. Just what did Renji mean? An had spent much of the day quietly pondering that very question. But, just as the card had asked, she remained patient and didn't ask Renji about it during the time they were at work. Reaching out, she fingered the rose petals one last time before starting to shut her terminal down for the night. Even though the note was a bit of a mystery, she still couldn't help the soft smile tugging at her lips.
"I'm sorry I couldn't give this to you before, Kagami-kun. Thanks for your giri-choco and Happy White Day."
The female agent-in-training with long black hair and freckles on her cheeks took the single white rose and the small envelope from Renji's hands, her eyes sparkling and her cheeks turning red as she did so. "Oh, don't be sorry! Thank you so much, Yanagi-sempai!"
Unable to restrain herself, she practically glomped Renji and placed a kiss on his cheek before going towards the training grounds, almost bouncing out of happiness. Renji watched the girl go and left the place with a small smile on his lips, mentally blocking the comments that came from the witnesses in his surroundings. For he had a debt to pay, and knew someone was waiting for him to finish what he started this morning after leaving a rather... cryptic message written on the card he left for her along with another white rose.
Your true White Day gift is waiting. Please wait until the end of the day.
He hadn't spoken a lot about his plans, not even with his family. He could guess that they knew he was up to something, yet decided to let him handle everything, and he was thankful to all of them...
And so, Yanagi Renji took a short shower and changed from his sparring clothes to his normal ones, checking on his belongings before he went towards the tech section. Yes, Tachibana's White Day present was safely in its rightful place, so it wouldn't be fair to make An wait anymore.
Logging out, An stretched lightly before gathering her things. She peeked her head out of her cubicle, and spotted Renji approaching. Pulling on her coat and bag, she carefully picked up the delicate rose before shutting off her light and heading over to meet Renji.
Smiling warmly, she greeted him. "Hi, Yanagi-kun. Thanks a lot for the lovely flower. All the other ladies that I talked to today really appreciated them too."
Ah, she was leaving the section almost at the same time he arrived. Good timing. So Renji smiled back at the girl, nodding.
"I'm glad you liked it," he told her, straightening his own coat a little. "It doesn't look like we have lots of things to do here, though, so shall we go?"
Nodding her head, An fell into step next to Renji as they left the building. The two were interrupted a few times as others came out to thank Renji for his White Day gift, and An noticed that some of the ladies gave her a look that seemed to suggest they still believed the rumours that had been floating around about them to be true. An still greeted them politely, and wished them a good evening, but she couldn't help but sigh a little on the inside. Guess there was no stopping the office rumour mill once it got started.
Once outside, An took a deep breath and exhaled happily. "Nothing against Sapporo, but it's good to be back home." She smiled at Renji as he held the door open for her. She was definitely curious as to whether Renji was going to reveal to her what his note had meant, but was hesitant to ask. Patience, An told herself.
The last one to thank Renji was Kagami, the young agent in training; she was leaving the building too with two other girls who also were fresh recruits, and she waved at both him and An before her friends (who also had white roses similar to hers) pulled her away. They looked like highschool girls ready to start gossiping, and that slightly ticked Renji off, but he hid it well when he nodded at them and walked away with An.
"I can empathize with such a thing," he said, a hand inside of his coat pocket and holding on the small black box containing the 'true gift'. "The famous 'There's no place like home' featured in Wizard of Oz is pretty true sometimes... And how did it go? I haven't spoken to Ooyama-san since he has spent all of his time filling the paperwork and I had to help a trainer friend of mine with some of the new agents in training."
The two started walking along their familiar route back towards their apartments, and An couldn't help the fond smile on her face. As hectic as Tokyo could be, she had missed the hustle and bustle. "Actually, it went really well. They'll be presenting our evidence at trial, which would probably explain why Ooyama-san's been so busy. While all that paperwork can be a bit much at times, it's worth it when you can help build up a case. And how are the new recruits doing?" A gust of wind blew past them, prompting An to protect her flower as best she could against it, her hair flying all about her face. Unwilling to sacrifice her flower, An didn't move her hands to brush any of her hair away. She couldn't help laughing a little at how dishevled she must've looked.
He patiently waited for the wind to stop blowing so An could focus more on her rose than on their talk, aware that his first gift was important to her. As things were back to normal, he replied to her question.
"Pretty well. And also, I've noticed that the number of female newcomers is steadily increasing, more exactly around 21% more than last year... which is quite the good thing. I wouldn't be surprised to see either Miki or one of the girls in the dojo apping for the Agency once they're old enough."
Even though she received the same gift as all the other girls, just the fact it was from Renji made it special in An's eyes. While she was away in Sapporo, An had managed to sort out her own feelings for Renji. She missed their almost nightly walks home from work, chatting at the dojo, and just spending time together and enjoying each other's company. Even though she was busy with work on her trip, not having that support seemed to leave a void in her that she could swear she could physically feel. But now that she had realized this about herself, she didn't really know what to do about it. Nothing in Renji's behaviour ever led her to believe that he might reciprocate those feelings, so for the time being, she did nothing. After all, she still wanted to be friends.
Satisfied that her flower was now safe, An straightened up, brushed the hair off her face and smiled at Renji. "That's great! 21% isn't a bad ratio at all. Better than a lot of the classes I took in university." An chuckled a little at the memory of her senior year number theory class where she was one of only two girls. "And I definitely know what you mean about some of the girls applying. Maybe I can convince some of them to sign up for tech. We're still a little lacking in female agents in our division." She winked playfully at Renji as they continued to walk. They were nearing the intersection where they would usually part ways, and An wondered if Renji really was going to explain his cryptic note. Maybe he hadn't meant at the end of the workday? Maybe he meant...at the end of the calendar day?
Renji briefly sensed some turmoil in An's train of thoughts, but kept quiet as always. As for him, he had a similar progression in what regarded the possibility of him developing feelings for his workmate and sort-of pupil, though his were slightly more clear. He was partially aware of their attraction ever since they sort-of kissed at her doorstep, but took it mostly as him being more used to interact with a female outside of his family and friends circle in a more regular basis...
That was, until the rumors in the office started behind their backs. Not only it was somewhat of an humilation to find out only when he was confronted about it by Kagami, but it was quite a wake-up call too. These people felt they could have an opinion on their relationship... and well, what did *he* feel about their situation? And what was up with *his* own thoughts about this woman named Tachibana An?
Yanagi Renji would voice those thoughts soon. No use angsting about that. So, as they reached the intersection, he just said: "This is a day for you, Tachibana-kun. So, I'll walk you home this time, if you want."
"I'd like that very much." An's smile grew a little brighter at Renji's offer. "Thanks, Yanagi-kun." It wasn't that An felt at all unsafe about walking home; it was just always more pleasant to have company.
As they were about to cross the street, An took the arm that Renji had offered her before giving it a light squeeze. This was definitely a nice way to end another long day at work.
Not minding the squeeze and how she seemed to lean against him as they walked, Renji just walked next to her, following her walking rhythm. He had no hurry, since unnecessarily rushing into action wasn't his style in any way, and after a long and tiring day of coaching and training the agent wanted to relax, just... enjoy the moment. No to mention that they were already close to An's building, and the moment was just about to come.
Soon, they were at the technician's doorstep...
An wondered if she was taking advantage of Renji's kindness the way she sidled a little closer to him as they walked. He didn't seem to mind, so she didn't pull away; it almost seemed as if he was...enjoying the walk? An let a relaxed smile settle on her face. There was just something exceedingly comfortable about having him next to her.
They were nearing her door, and it was only then that An realized that he still hadn't mentioned anything about the note he had left. However, even though she was curious about it, it just seemed exceedingly rude to ask about it. After all, the flower was quite nice, and the walk home even nicer.
An fished through her bag for her keys as they stopped at her doorstep. She smiled warmly at Renji. "Thanks again for the lovely flower," An gestured to the blossom cradled gently in her hand. "And for the walk home." She was about to bid him a good night, but something told her to just stay put for a moment.
"For the second time, you're welcome," he told her, letting her search for the keys. Since she wasn't paying attention to him in those moments, it was the perfect minute to pull out something...
When An turned and bid him goodnight , Renji took her free hand and placed a small black box on it. "Remember what I told you about waiting until the end of the day for your true gift?", he murmured, his voice and his smile gentler than ever. "The moment has come, An. The present here is for you."
An felt her breath catch in her throat as Renji smiled at her. His words washed over her, and she managed to nod before feeling something small being placed in her hands. Looking down at the box then back up to Renji's face, An was quite certain that she was wearing a look of surprise and puzzlement along with the smile she could feel spreading across her face.
With careful movements, An started to undo the bow on the box after receiving a confirmatory nod from Renji. Her slim fingers slipped the lid off, and An took in an audible breath as she laid eyes on its contents.
"Oh Renji..." An didn't even notice that she had addressed him by his first name, and had forgotten to add any sort of honorific to it either. She carefully fingered the small, silver, heart-shaped pendant, eyes still wide with wonderment. "It's beautiful....Thank you so much..."
She looked up at him with an expression that was filled with both hope and questioning. Did this mean that Renji had feelings for her too? Or was she reading too much into things?
The man simply looked at An for a second, not moving an inch either closer or away. Then, with a long sigh, he fully opened his always half-closed eyes and stared at her, dark brown irises fixed on the woman's eyes. And he extended a hand to gently cup An's cheek, reassuring her that it would be okay to go on.
"Open the pendant. Just do it, An."
By now, An had grown accustomed to seeing Renji with his eyes half closed, so the sight of them fully open caught her a bit off guard. She found herself mesmerized by their rich chocolate colour, and soulful expression. Her eyes remained affixed to his as she leaned ever so slightly into his touch, her heart beating faster inside her chest. It look a good deal of willpower to tear her eyes away from his face, but she turned her attention to the pendant still sitting in her hand. Her hands were steady despite the emotional roller coaster she seemed to be on, and she managed to open the pendant in one smooth motion, revealing the contents inside...
I love you
An tilted the pendant a little, and the delicate engraving seemed to wink back at her. She couldn't help the gasp that escaped her lips before she turned her head to look at Renji once more. "Renji..." She hadn't expected him to reciprocate her feelings, but now that she knew he did, the look of surprise on her face started to change into a soft, and sweet smile. She held the pendant securely in her hand as she took a step closer to him, embracing him. "I-I love you too..." Her voice was quiet as she made her own confession. It had been a long time since An was involved in any sort of relationship, and she had to admit that deep down she was a little bit scared of what might happen. But right now, she felt as though she was over the moon, and decided that this was by far and away the best White Day ever.
