Summary: Short, kinda cute talk between a tech girl and a secretary. ^^
Hmmmm... Sakuno looked at the small package wrapped in blue paper, which she should give to Fuji before he left the country for the Holidays. Their encounter was just around the corner, and it was the perfect chance for her to tell him about her feelings, but she wasn't that sure. More than angsting and fearing about whether he loved her back or not it was because she felt the pieces of their puzzle didn't fit... and she couldn't really understand the reason why. Or maybe (who knew?) she didn't want to uncover it...
But enough of that. She wanted to get the work of the day done, and as efficiently as she always did in any circumstances. And then, go home. Or maybe linger around a little, seeing who needed her assistance... So, she left the package in her bag and started to check the last document awaiting to be printed, sighing to herself and hoping it'd turn out okay so she could give it to the person who needed it.
An muttered to herself as she came down the hallway back toward the offices. That meeting had been a mess. Her team had gotten chewed out, and it left a bad taste in her mouth. Not to say that there was anything wrong with her work in particular, but because some procedures were missed, the evidence they had uncovered wouldn't be usable in a court of law. Damn technicalities.
She passed by Sakuno's desk and gave the secretary a small smile. "Hey Sakuno...how're you doing?" Noticing the package that the petite young woman was stashing away, she smiled a little more. "Getting ready for the holidays?"
Blushing as she noticed that An *had* seen the gift (or at least how she put it quickly in the bag), Sakuno nodded quietly, trying to draw the less attention to it. "Um, yes, An-san. I have to leave everything ready and done so I can enjoy the holidays better, after all."
She noticed how An looked tired and almost dejected, and automatically reached for the cookies plate next to her monitor. "Um, something happened?"
Smiling a little as she reached for a cookie, An shook her head lightly and tried to wave away Sakuno's concern.
"Nothing you need to worry about, Sakuno-chan. Just got dressed down at a meeting. But hey, nothing I can't handle."
She bit into the cookie, giving a satisfied 'Mmmm'. "You coming to the Chirstmas party this year?"
".. Oh," she just said, and then An munched on the cookie and asked about the Christmas party. So, the secretary nodded and replied as honestly as she could, happy to distract her friend from "the gift".
"Um, yes, I am. Hoshina-san said we secretaries shall always be ready for anything that may happen, and also I'm curious to see how it'll turn out. The Halloween party was good, so..."
Nodding her head, An listened with interest. "Cool. I haven't actually been to any of these parties yet." She chuckled a litttle ruefully. "I always either let myself be talked into doing work, or something or other."
But this year was different. Someone actually bothered to ask her if she wanted to go. An's thoughts drifted a little to a certain quiet, brown-haired field agent.
"Sakuno-chan? What do people usually wear to these sorts of things? I mean, it's a casino this year right?"
"Hm?" For special occasions and parties like this one, Sakuno always relied more on Tomoka's tips and the shopping trips that her best friend and now fashion designer took her in each time. Still, she felt that she could give at least some basic pointers to An, so...
"Um, a dress sounds better than anything. And this is also a part from the Agency which will take place in the Tokyo Hilton... so, I'd wear semi or fully formal one. Several high class people might be there, An-san."
Hmm..sounded like a dress up party then. An cringed on the inside. She wasn't really used to those sorts of events. She was definitely going to have to dig through her wardrobe then. She had to have something appropriate somewhere, right? Maybe?
"Hmm..okay then." An bit her lip thoughtfully as she considered things. "Maybe I should find out what Yanagi-san is planning to wear..."
Whoops? Had she said that out loud?
"Yanagi-san?" Sakuno looked at her friend with big blinking eyes. Hm, that name was familiar - ah, the tall and polite field agent who was the brother-in-law of An's martial arts teacher. So this meant that he was An's date...
"Um," she said almost in a whisper, "I take that you're going with him, right An-san?"
Yup, An realized that she did indeed voice her last thought, and couldn't help the light blush that came to her face. She laughed a little, trying to hide her embarassment.
"Well...y'know...since we don't live too far from each other and all...um..he was probably just being polite, you know? Figuring that I probably wouldn't go unless someone made me..." An realized that she was probably blabbering now and just smiled sheepishly.
"But yes. He's accompanying me to the party."
Sakuno nodded and smiled a little, like she used to do in school and women's college times when Tomoka came to her and their common friends with the latest gossips. "Don't say that like it's a bad thing or anything. I haven't spoken a lot to Yanagi-san, but, um, he looks like a rather good person..."
She then raised a finger to her lips, blushing slightly as well and nodding to silently tell her friend that her secret was safe with her.
Letting out a breath that she didn't know she was holding, An smiled warmly. "Thanks Sakuno-chan. Yeah...he is really nice. I mean, I have no idea what he thinks or anything, but.."An shrugged before laughing quietly. "Well, we'll see. For now, we're just friends."
Reaching for another cookie, An pulled up a spare chair so she could chat with her friend more comfortably. "And what about you? You're coming to the party right?"
"Um, yes," she replied. "All the secretaries are expected there, as always in these parties. I don't have a proper date, yet I'm not letting that go against me..."
The only person she really wanted to be her date wouldn't be there for her this time, anyway. Still, Sakuno didn't want to always rely on Fuji for such things... he always called her his Princess and offered to be her Knight, but she knew she wouldn't always be able to keep him by her side. Real Life didn't work that way.
"Ah, no need for a date, Sakuno-chan. Strong, independent women like us don't need a date to have a good time, right?" An grinned brightly at the secretary.
Checking her watch, An groaned slightly. "Sorry Sakuno-chan. I can't stay to chat. My boss is going to kill me if we don't fix this screw up soon. But thanks for the cookies, and for the advice on what to wear."
An winked at her friend as she pushed the chair back to its place.
"Um, see you," and Sakuno placed the cookies plate back in its usual place to hide any evedence about An's presence. Nicely enough, she was succesful; nobody even asked her about anything out of normal...
As she returned to full work, the secretary thought of An's words. Strong, independent women like us... She didn't know if she really fit in the "strong, independent women" slot, since she certainly was more quiet and restrained than the girls her age (specially compared with Tomoka and An, or even Chiharu Kouda and Reiha Minazuki from the analyst section), but hey... just because she was quiet it didn't meant she couldn't be strong for herself, eh?
She then came back to typing the documents of the day, hoping that her resolution wouldn't fade away no matter what happened the next days.
