1. So...I bought my plane ticket on Monday (for my flight on Wednesday). Since I was going to spend the night in the airport, I went to bed early Tuesday morning...woke up early afternoon...and found out that the site I had used wanted me to fax them a copy of my credit card statement by 15:00. I read this at 14:00. And I really was just not ( Read more... )

In my understanding of China, he understands that while his economy is growing, he hasn't been restored to the power he formerly was, and he can't be comfortable until he is because of the way the Western nations are intent to contain him (and he remembers all that's happened in the 19th and 20th centuries, so he's quite wary). I think your interpretation is valid (and one many people seem to have irl), but it's not one I agree with. :P Though I do see the 'screw you' XDDDDD

Most counting of the years starts with Huang Di, who is seen as more or less starting true Han culture. We aren't quite at five thousand yet, but we are getting there...and we are so close that we usually just say five thousand. :P It boggles my mind that people consider the Xia dynasty as the beginning of Chinese history! XD (Or even the Shang!) It always starts from the Three Sovereigns and Five Sages in my mind (and that was how it was taught in China afaik, though with the current historical revisionism, I can't say if it's that way still...)

Oooh, thanks for the link! Romania is quite cool in the fic. :D I do remember your talking about this author before...and I did actually read the China fic this time. I think she does write a very good China - certainly a better one than most portrayals I've read...though there are certain things I'd disagree with her about (but eh, that's the nature of history), and there are a few factual inaccuracies :3333 Although I think the inaccuracies I found are things that would require somewhat of a general knowledge of all of Chinese history + Chinese foreign relations, which is asking a lot of people who aren't natively Chinese or who are not scholars of China (and I'm pretty wary of foreign scholars of China generally, even those at the PhD level, because they definitely see China in a different way than I (and a number of other Chinese) do)

XDDDD Well, considering that my trip to France just isn't meant to be, I'll probably be able to get it to you earlier. :) Sorry for the long wait!
