In 2004, Jackie Brown Otter founded Pretty Bird Woman House, a women's shelter at the Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota. The shelter is named after Brown Otter's sister, who was kidnapped, raped, and beaten to death in 2001.

That's a cause I really feel I can get behind. While philosophically I don't necessarily believe anyone has a historical duty or debt to repay, that shouldn't even matter - there are still people suffering, and furthermore, it's in the middle of a developed country where people aren't even going to think to look for it. Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention.

A lot of people don't believe in historical duty/debt. I think I do because of my upbringing in China, where the wrongs the West and Japan did to us were drilled into our heads to foster nationalism and obedience to the state.

The state of First Nation peoples is commonly ignored, especially in this country and especially with First Nation women. It's really very sad. I'm glad you feel this cause is worth supporting.
