In the stairwell, all Tim said was, "It's 'Tom Draper' here, not Drake." And he didn't sound pissed or impatient. In fact, there was a sort of impersonal air to the way he was treating Damian, like the younger boy was someone he was showing around the office — necessarily polite, a little wary, a little watchful, but no deeper emotions attached.

Damian watched him suspiciously, not yet sure what he was up to. "How long have you been here, Draper?"

"Almost four months." Tim watched Damian back, moving down the stairs at a quick pace. "You're familiar with the multiverse concept, right?"

"-TT- Of course I am," Damian said. "Are you trying to say you're a different Tim Drake?"

He laughed. "Don't get too excited. There's another one of me in Seattle. That's also where N and B are." Pushing open the stairwell door, he went to 301 and listened for a moment before letting them in. Johnny and Santo didn't seem to be in.

"If you want, I can have you on a train to Seattle within the hour. But Batman seems to have disappeared for a while, so don't expect to see much of him." Tim paused and looked at Damian. "Who are you, anyway?"

Two Drakes? Well, this one was certainly more tolerable than the one back home. "I'll need to get in contact with them, of course," Damian said. N and B? Did that mean Nightwing wasn't Batman anymore? Or was there another N he should know? "I'm Damian Wayne. My father is Bruce Wayne." He stepped into the room and pulled a face. This wasn't much better than the room upstairs.

Most likely, the Tim at home had never given Damian this particular look, which was a mixture of genuine interest and cold calculation. He didn't bother hiding it because what was Damian going to do, tell someone Tim was looking at him funny?

"I hope Bruce turns up sometime soon, then." If he'd known exactly how that hope would turn out, he would've chosen his words more carefully.

Why was Drake looking at him funny? An odd kind of funny, too, not the "I'm expecting you to do something wrong" look that Damian was used to seeing on that face.

"He's alive? Here?" Damian asked hopefully. Well. Of course his father was alive. They'd proved that. Was this journey a consequence of his return? "Have you seen him?"

Tim nodded. "Last month." More like two months ago, but Damian seemed hopeful, so there was no reason to squash it unnecessarily. "You'll have to ask Nightwing for more details. At least, I'm assuming he saw Batman on a more regular basis."

He crossed the room, crouching and pulling a long flat case out from beneath the battered couch. "Did they take anything important from you?"

The case appeared to hold books, mostly older-looking paperbacks with 70s colors on the covers. Tim reached beneath them and opened up the hidden compartment, lifting the books out of the way like a swinging shelf. Beneath was a small arsenal and various gadgets. Nothing impressive — Tim himself looked annoyed — but what he'd managed to gather so far.

"Everything. Even my knives and my sword," Damian said. He went over to look at the box and gave a derisive huff. "That's all you have?"

He rolled his eyes. "We can scout out the Baxter Building tonight and see if we can break in. They're not going to give the weapons back."

Tim took out a pair of night vision goggles, replaced the books, and shut the case. "I don't know when my roommates'll be back, but don't attack them. One's a pyrokinetic and the other is made of rock. If you're hungry, we can go out." Because if he didn't like his accommodations, he probably wasn't going to like whatever was in the fridge. "If not," he flicked his gaze up, regarding Damian with cool amusement, "we can train on the rooftop."

"Both," Damian said. Now that he thought about it, he was really hungry. "Food first, then training. I want to see what you're capable of, Draper."

Damian had probably not had much opportunity to see Tim smile, but if he had, it might not have been quite so sardonic. "Okay," he said simply, with deceptive mildness, pushing the case back under the couch. "Preference?"

Damian considered for a moment, then said, "Indian cuisine will do. Of sufficient quality."
