Johnny would be disappointed in him. Reed was not going out as much as he would have approved of. Janet and Tony were in their own laboratories, doing their own projects, or participating in their own melodramas. With them preoccupied and Johnny in Vegas, that left Reed alone to work endlessly on his project. He was working fast and albeit recklessly from the days of no sleep, food, or down time, but he was desperate for progress. He needed this machine up and running to prove to the people and himself that he could do this--he could make things right again and fix the mistakes that this universe's version of himself had made.
Wiping the sweat from his brow, he pulled back from the machine. The interdimensional bridge was tinier than the ones in New Mexico, Washington, and New York. It was about nine by five with crude materials and an exposed skeleton, but a sophisticated wiring ran along the frame and connected to the control panel. Reed stared at his work and at the buttons before him, fingers skimming over the controls. He should test it out--it would be the wise, scientifically responsible thing to do, but he was exhausted and somewhat delirious and there was the nagging need to fix.
"Fix it," he muttered before launching forward, quickly entering the codes to activate the machine. He stood back, half in horror at what he had done and blind anticipation. The machine whirred and spit to life like a dull fan for a few minutes. Reed kept watching intently for the smallest budge and then...suddenly with a spark, the portal lit up. It shined brightly with a FLASH that Reed had to cover his eyes. There was noise and suddenly growls and everything after that was a blur.
It was like the bridge was vomiting them out with gusto. He could not really tell what they were especially through the blinding light. It was just deformed shadow after shadow spilling out and thrashing his lab, running (or flying) out the doors and windows. There were anguished screams he had never heard before in this world and a faint familiarity in some of the noises. Reed tried stretching high above the flash to see what was happening--if he brought more people in this world--but most (if not all) the creatures escaped his lab save for two.
"...Ben?" He stretched back to normal. "Sue?"
