Pepper liked having the keys to the building. She liked it, because it meant that she could come and go as she pleased, making her own hours when necessary. If she wanted to come in early, she came in early; if she wanted to stay late, she stayed late. For most, coming late and leaving early were also options, but Pepper wasn't like most. She was curiously wired, a workaholic in no small way. To her, having access to the building was its own kind of freedom.
Pepper liked her office. It was her space, a compact room that held her touch in every corner. She'd spent more of the last year in that room than in her shared bedroom in the Willows, easily. It was small for someone in her position, but it had windows and a view. The chairs were comfortable enough to sleep in, and the potted plant she'd gotten to brighten up the place was still green, even though it'd died a miserable death months ago. Everything was in its place, and that was how Pepper liked it.
She didn't like it when things got moved. She didn't like it when someone came in unannounced---she had a schedule for a reason.
But John Constantine didn't care much for schedules, nor did he give two fucks about personal boundaries. That's why she wasn't as surprised as she should have been when she found him sitting in her chair, going through her papers. She'd only been out of the office for less than three minutes---roughly the time it took for her to buy battery acid coffee and a candybar from the vending machines down the hall; breakfast of champions---but that was enough time for him.
"What the hell are you doing?" she asked sharply.
