WHO: the battroll and yousonofabat
WHAT: BAT-THERAPY WITH THE FAILED ROBIN CLUB
WHERE: a diner in TorC
WHEN: Not long after Jason's network post
WARNINGS: BAT-ANGST, BAT-ISSUES, BAT-INSECURITY, batd language
SUMMARY: So, Jason is bringing the murder parade to New Mexico, and all the Bats are getting ready to kick former-Robin ass in the name of JUSTICE. But, that's not how Steph works. She's handling the situation her way. Spoilers: her way involves sending Damian to his room and buying Jason a milkshake.

Contrary to popular belief, Steph usually knew when she was about to jump in over her head. She knew what she could handle, and she knew what she couldn't---she knew when a situation was too deep for her, too much. She just chose to ignore that little voice of reason, because giving up and backing down were not in the cards for her---not ever. She'd spent most of her life trying to prove herself to someone, be it her father or Tim or Bruce or Babs or even---God help her---Damian. She wanted to be approved of, needed to be approved of, and once upon a time she'd worn that on her sleeve---see me, see what I'm doing, tell me that it's good.

But she'd grown up. Internalizing that need had made it switch gears, twisting in on itself and emerging in new ways. She claimed to anyone who listened that she didn't need anyone's approval at all.

But if she hadn't been looking to please a dead Bat, she would have done the sensible thing and left Gotham when everything started falling to hell.

And that, she thought, was Jason's problem, too. The first thing he'd done when addressing her on the network hadn't been to threaten her---no, he'd tried to connect. He'd called her his sister. He'd said they were the same. She didn't---couldn't---believe that, but it'd hit her as something that she could exploit. If she could get him talking, win him over, maybe she could guide him away from the stabbing and shooting and killing. Maybe.

It'd worked with Damian, after all.

And that was why she was in a 24 hour diner, making a folded-up caterpillar creature with a paper straw wrapper. She'd ordered the milkshake to make this meeting look normal, but the idea of drinking it made her nauseous.
