Dedication. There was a huge, disturbing lack of people out there who still understood the meaning of it. There wasn't much in the way of people left in the world who understood or had experienced what it meant to be loyal to something, to have a core value that drove the way they led their life and how they chose to risk said life.

Nick did a few more scans of the immediate area- checking different levels, possible blind spots and hiding places - making it absolutely certain that no one was following or tracking. He checked around the opening of the alleyway for traps. They knew it was him, he may as well check to be sure it was really them.

The last time he'd seen Daisy and Alex, he still wasn't convinced that they'd fully grown into that concept yet. They were kids, their lives had barely started yet and he was making it his duty to help them start it and give them somewhere to go that wasn't to a bigoted, suburban wasteland, or worse - into the arms of the guys who would prey on their insecurities for profit.

But where they were from, apparently, he was already gone and they had to rise above the anarchy and paralyzing anxiety and pull the world back to its feet and doing it without whining everywhere or making some fuss about their feelings. That counted for something.

He strode into the alleyway, keeping his eye on the two figures, just in case they moved suddenly.

((Hi, guys. I'm really sorry that this is at late'o'clock and all. I was dealing with a rough patch today and yesterday and didn't have my computer around))

She didn't breathe for a long stretch of seconds. It was a weakness, a soft, sore point as tender as a bruise, but it wasn't something that was bared very often. Daisy didn't have many people that could be used against her; the big bang had effectively pared away all but a handful of her meaningful relationships. She could count the people that she'd kill for on both hands, and the ones she'd die for on just one. She'd compartmentalized her feelings until they were manageable and safe.

But seeing Nick again made something in her tighten and turn over. Daisy didn't let it register on her impressive pokerface, but the glass in the window of the building next to them rattled briefly in its frame. It was a tiny tremor, larger than shaking hands but not big enough to register far. She finally exhaled.

"Sir."

((no problem!! don't worry about it ♥))

His eyes glanced over to Daisy briefly, then back forward to Nick, still calm and unemotional. Though it was hard even for him to pull off, he couldn't look anything but his typical apathetic self in this situation. It was what Daisy needed, and Nick would have wanted.

The small tremor went ignored, but Alex was feeling the same on the inside. There were very few men that a god had to respect, trust, and even fear, and Nick Fury was one of those men.

"Nicholas." He didn't sound different from his usual self, but trained eyes would see him standing up just a little bit straighter, shoulders back, wanting to look bigger, stronger than he really was.

In his gut, he knew the kids would be doing backflips. But he expected - naw, he knew it wouldn't show. They'd spent more than enough time at his for him to know that they were better than that. As he strode towards them, he toyed with the idea of making them freak, just to see if they'd stayed sharp. But she was smart enough to man up, and he was a god. It would've been a dead-end to tease 'em. And with the way the city was right now, chit-chat could happen later. He planted his feet close enough so that he could see the two of them clearly, but far enough away that he had room to breath in case they ended up being Skrulls or LMDs.

"Evening, kids." he greeted, his tone even. Open, but he wasn't famous for his cheer. Sure, he was happy to see 'em, but it didn't mean he needed any more of an intro than usual. The S.H.I.E.L.D. family didn't need their reunions tearjerking and grand.

He'd trained them to be better than the best, and so they were. Aside from that traitorous little tremor, Daisy's feelings were capped tightly. She told herself that she'd deal with it later, that she'd give herself room to accept what had happened and what was happening, but she knew better. For people in their line of work, there was never time for the 'later' they delegated all their unnecessary feelings to.

"It's good to see you, sir," she said, just as calmly as if she'd touched base with him the day before. "I might even be tempted to call it a relief."

He hadn't expected to see Fury again, not in this lifetime, but here the man was, standing before them, and Alexander didn't know what he should feel. He wasn't about to show it, ever, but he was relieved that Nick was here, happy even. That wasn't who he was though, who he had the luxury of being. It never was, never would be. He was a god, after all, and now a director of what was left of the world's top peacekeeping force.

He only nodded in agreement with Daisy's words. She was more suited to say such things to him. "How long have you been here?"

Good. Very good. It didn't take much for him to see that they'd stayed in touch with everything he'd taught them, even if he'd apparently stopped being around. Actually, he was privately but nonetheless a little impressed that someone had found a way to off him for good, with explosive magic with "liability" written all over it, no less. He'd gone down with every other old fart in the entire world, but judging from the reactions of these two, someone had noticed him.

He thought about the shame and doubt that clouded over the missions against HYDRA, but he was too good, too old, and too much the pro to let it show at all in his face or gestures. But still, after all that murky shit they'd dealt with in the world and after all the people wanting to kill him, the fact that people noticed and mourned was reason enough for this old war horse to keep his hand in the game.

"'bout a week." he told them. "I'm sure you know that the Widow is here, and it seems that Commander Hill ended up here shortly after I did."
He said the latter's name like a curse, but she would take any chance to dissolve his name into a hate pow-wow. He was better than that by decades.

"Now, to business: Until we see scientific evidence of that dimensional machine truly bein' random, as far as I'm concerned, people being pulled here is kidnapping."
He was still in the exploration phase, discovering what he was and wasn't capable of here and how much people were being monitored (constantly, if the phones were any indication). But he wouldn't have said it if he didn't feel it was accurate.
