Being up at ungodly hours was not foreign to Amara. Her sleep schedule hadn't been quite right for a long time now, ever since her first run in with the capekillers. Usually she stayed in her room quietly texting her friends and boyfriend or reading by a small lamp so as not to disturb her roommates. Eventually she would fall asleep for a few hours out of pure exhaustion but tonight, no matter how she tried, sleep would just not come. Half of the people she knew losing their powers was still weighing heavily on her mind. Sally had nearly had a nervous breakdown and that had scared Amara more than all of the freezers in the world.

Instead of tossing and turning, Amara was sitting at the kitchen table with a mug of hot tea and a big bowl of cereal. She had long since given up wearing any sort of attractive nightgown since one of her roommates was a male; tonight she was looking resplendent in a t-shirt (taken from Roberto) and dark leggings. Her hair was mused from her sad attempts at sleep. She wasn't much of a cold, sugary cereal fan but the refrigerator was practically empty and beggars couldn't be choosers.

Pepper might not have been a ninja but Amara had stuck in and out of more places as a teenager than she would like to admit. She knew that the other woman did not want to be found. Out of politeness, Amara was going to pretend she hadn't seen her but the silence was interrupted by her spoon scraping the bottom of her bowl loudly.

Oops.

Pepper turned on her heel, eyes wide. She had really hoped to get in and out without getting caught, but she'd never been an overly lucky woman. She froze, as if staying very still would make Amara not see her. But no, eye contact had been made and they were forced by social niceties to interact, at least briefly.

"Hi," Pepper said lamely. There was a significant pause before she dredged up anything else to say. "How are you?"

"Fine, thank you," she replied, almost automatically, just out of ingrained politeness. This was going to be weird and awkward, Amara could already tell. She was torn-- on one hand, she was curious as to why her housemate was out at all hours, but on the other hand, not her business. Asking "How are you?" back seemed really... well. Stupid. "Would you like a cup of tea?"

Tea was easy. She could heat the kettle up with her powers. That, she didn't mind doing.

Pepper balanced the pros and cons of tea in her head. On the one hand, a moment off her feet and a cup of something caffeinated enough to keep her going for a few more hours. On the other hand, it would take her at least six minutes to drink the tea, and that left room for all kinds of small talk. It was a tough call, and if Amara hadn't been her roommate for so long, she probably would have found a reason to get out of it.

"I---" the no sat poised on the tip of her tongue, ready for action. "---I'd love one."

Six minutes couldn't hurt. Pepper was just a touch lonely, so even if it was an awkward conversation with someone she barely knew, it was better than nothing.

Amara rose, walking over the the kettle. There was still warm water in it. With a flick of her fingers, the kettle was properly heated up and whistling within seconds. Living with mutants did have its benefits, didn't it? She felt a little strange about looking such a mess in front of her housemate but Pepper looked so tired she probably wouldn't even remember this in the morning.

She handed a steaming mug to Pepper carefully. "It's very hot."

Once the cup was handed off, Amara ran a hand through her hair, hoping to make herself look a bit more decent.
