Despite having passed it millions of times, Sollux had never really bothered with the Doughnut shop. Primarily, he supposed, because he usually didn't feel like throwing money at some kind of human foodstuff that he'd never heard of before.

...But he also wasn't exactly living life in the fast lane at the moment, and boredom is as boredom does. At some point in his daily dose of aimless wandering, Sollux finally ventured into the Doughnut Shack.

And his eyebrows show up to his hairline almost instantly.

"...M'gann? What are you...?" Why was she in ToC. What was this even.

M'gann smiled cheerfully, waving as her next customer came in, but her smile widened when she saw Sollux. Oh right! He lived here didn't he?

"Hi Sollux! Welcome to the Donut Shack!" She leaned across the counter with a grin. "How are you? Can I get you something?"

Sollux blinked.

"Wait, you work here?" It didn't actually take him long to figure out how that worked, considering how fast she could move. He moved over to the counter. "Why didn't you tell me you worked in ToC?"

"I guess I just sort of forgot. I don't spend that much time here when I'm not at work." she said sheepishly, rubbing the back of her neck.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to leave you out of the loop."

He thought about that for a couple seconds, then gave her a one-sided shrug. So weird. "I guess that sort of makes sense. Sort of." He brushed it off, moving on.

"That's cool. Uh...anyway, I'm fine - mostly just been trying to set things up in the new hive TZ bought. How about you?"

"Well, one of my friends got sent home so that was really lousy." M'gann rubbed her cheek, then shrugged.

"But I made a couple of new friends and Nilla is even bigger than before and I got some paints the other day when I was at the store so I think learning to use them should be fun."

She glanced over at the domed 'test' case on top of the main display.

"Have you ever had a doughnut before Sollux?"

Sollux blinked, about to respond to each individual piece of news before it was quickly overwhelmed by the next event being described. In the end he just ended up nodding, to show that he had, indeed, been listening.

"Oh...that sounds cool." He settled down at the counter, leaning against it, looking very much like the teenage loiterer he was.

"Don't think so. What is it, some kind of pastry?"

"Yes, they're a sort of fluffy fried cake, sweet and pretty airy. You want to try one?"

M'gann ventured over to the sample case and plucked out a plain glazed doughnut with a chocolate dip topping.

"This one is really good." she told him, pulling it in half for them to share.

He shrugged. "Yeah, sure, why not."

He took a bite out of the thing she'd just handed him, and had a similar experience to most times he tasted a new Earth food. Whether or not it was good, it was just kind of weird and foreign and not what he was used to at all.

This, is particular, was really sweet.

"Not bad," he commented. "Is this all this place sells?"

"No, we have cheesecake and cookies and stuff too, but doughnuts are the specialty." She grinned, munched her own half delightedly. "I love the chocolate ones."

Well, he was definitely familiar with chocolate and stuff like that, at least. "Oh, cool. Yeah, they seem pretty good." He shrugged and took another bite. "So how long have you been working here?"

"Hmmm, since December so only a few months. Kara helped me get a job here after my first day at another job went all kinds of wrong." she explained, mirroring his teenage loiterer posture almost down to the last muscle before remembering to not be a copycat and tilting her hips a bit too.

"I like it a lot, everyone is really nice here and I know how to make all sorts of tasty stuff since I started out. It's a lot of fun."

"Do you have a job here, Sollux?"

Sollux sort of noticed her copycatting, and while it was largely subconscious, he tilted his head slightly as if to say 'am I crazy or is this a thing that is happening?' After a couple seconds he shook his head, looking away.

"Uh...no. There aren't a lot of humans willing to hire someone like me." He shrugged, kind of bitterly. "Too young, too alien."

M'gann frowned, swallowing the last of her mouthful.

"Yeah, Seattle is more friendly to the displaced than most but even there most people don't really like us..."

She smiled hopefully.

"But, well, I'm sure there's someone here who would take you on. Maybe my boss might hire you if Kara doesn't come back."

"Yeah maybe, I guess," he said, frowning slightly. Though the concept of working in a place like that sounded extremely tedious to him. He had marketable skills, and he wanted to use them, damn it.

Something else came to mind though. "Is Kara the one that, you know...went home?"
