Those Crazy Pop Artists

Anyone else noticed the trend to take a two bit pop song, add a backing track courtesy of an 80s band, and suddenly you've got a worldwide hit on your hands? Sugababes took Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric," and now Jamelia is sampling Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus".
My ears can't decide whether to be offended by this bastardisation of music or not. Sampling goes back donkeys years, but when the track is based entirely on someone else's track with new lyrics thrown on top of it... is it really original work deserving of worldwide acclaim?
