on waiting

Dec 27, 2007 16:46

My father’s mother’s sisters, they are the topic of a story here. There was one, Adza, and one, Jadza. That is to say, officially, Anja and Jadwiga. Maybe. You know I’m poor with names. Jadwiga and Anja were very close, the former the senior to the latter. The older sister married. Anja was in love with the husband, Aleksander [or Olesz]. I am named after him. My third name out of four. Jadwiga was married to Aleksander and Anja was in love with her sister’s husband, so much so that she moved in with them. Two sisters and a sister’s husband. She did not date anyone else her entire life. She never married. She waited for 50 years. And when her older sister died, she and Aleksander married. They lived together for 4 years as man and wife. Until she died. Somewhere in my mind I have the memory of Aleksander waiting until the day I was born to die.
