I've been watching Beach films from the early 1960s lately. Yes, really. My favorite quote thus far is from Beach Party. There is an aging professor who has a grotesque beard and goofy glasses - he is researching the sexual patterns of teenage surfers. Yes, really. In any case, a man asks him why he has that horrible beard. To which he replies:
When I first started teaching at the university, I was very young. So young, that whenever I taught my students would laugh at me, whenever I would lecture my colleagues would laugh at me, whenever I said anything of interest my friends would laugh at me. This went on for quite some time until I decided to ask my older professor/mentor about the matter.
He was eating lunch at the time, he had a beard and was wearing glasses, reading the newspaper. I said, "Professor, whenever I teach my students laugh at me, whenever I lecture my colleagues laugh at me, and whenever I say anything of interest my friends laugh at me. What should I do????"
Without even looking up he said, "Grow a beard and start wearing glasses."

I wonder what my alternatives are? My guess is that the faux hawk/mohawk I now have isn't helping matters any...
