I think Dead and Gone is the Sookie Stackhouse book still in hardcover. I actually liked it quite a bit. It is very dark and violent as far as this series goes. I think people do have a point in that it reads like it was writing hastily and not well edited. There are some definite issues, such the blood bond between Sookie and Eric that I never quite understood how that worked or why Sookie seems not to be bothered that she is losing her free will regarding Eric. And the book is set up to be about the shifters revealing themselves to the world, which quickly falls to the wayside. But what I liked the most is that there seems to be real emotional consequences for Sookie at the end of this book, when with most of the other books, all the violence and death barely seem to make an impact on her.
Did you ever get the chance to catch any of the True Blood series? I absolutely love it, particularly the first season, and I think it is better than the books.

No, I haven't caught any of it. I don't have HBO, and really haven't wanted to spend money on the episodes in any form. I do sort of follow the commentary, so I'm aware of how the show's different though. :)
