It isn't easy, carving out an honest living in a city like this. It's even harder when you're the kind of person that just wants everyone to live peacefully, people think they can take advantage of you. But I am not the sort of person you can take advantage of, not anymore. Not since I learned the hard way why you always carry a knife in your ( Read more... )

[There's a lot of mail going into the congressman's office right now. in fact, he shows up to retrieve a particular wrapped package personally.]

I have my suspicions that this package might be less than clean, but a good postal worker never snoops. I know what he wants, though, and reach into the bag of packages to go out in the morning for it.

You did not have to come all the way here yourself, sir.

Nothing like a employee who doesn't ask questions, not that the ones who asked questions lasted long here.

I always have time to meet my constituents.

I am not new to the idea of talking to important people, but I still smile modestly as I step out from behind the desk with his package and a clipboard.

Well, I suppose there is no point talking about it now. If you can sign here?

I smile, in a way that seems just friendly enough, but tends to intimidate people. I'm sure she even suspects the packages contents, but she's a white knight in this city and would never look.

Of course. [He takes the pen and signs with a flourish.] Anything besides the package?

Yes, there are a few letters for you. Hold on.

I hand the package over, only a little shaken by his smile. I have gotten that look many times before, and will probably get it many times again. Although the familiar weight of my switchblade in my pocket does help. I cannot say I am thrilled to turn my back on him as I go through my bag for his letters, but I am never entirely comfortable turning my back on people here and it never deters me from doing my duty.

I wait for the letters, not because I think there would be anything of value, but mainly because I have nothing better to do and it creates the image I like.

I find the letters quickly and hand them over. Efficiency is important in this job, and I hate to leave people waiting.

He's probably a little suspicious about your apparent lack of a name, but I hope he doesn't ask. I respect his privacy, after all. And in a house city like this, I do not like the idea of someone being able to look me up in the phone book.

It was a pleasure meeting you, sir.
