Top 10 Albums: Revisited

Aug 19, 2009 02:19

Many many eons ago I posted my top 10 albums. It's been almost one year, and I think it's high time I update this list, just to examine how my musical preferences have changed. I hope you atleast enjoy this, and hope your musical tastes change over time, constantly finding new flavours that dance across your palette. Also, not being able to sleep is a bitch.

10.
Old:     You're a Woman, I'm a Machine - Death From Above 1979
New:   Absolution - Muse
The shortest album (I believe atleast) by Muse, I found it rougher and more metal sounding then their next albums, but more put together than Origin of Symmetry. A transition album, where they were finding that right sound for them, and personally I think this right here IS the Muse sound.

9.
Old:      Atlantis: Hymns for Disco - K-Os
New:    Woman King - Iron & Wine
A short 6 song record by Iron & Wine turns out to be my favourite recordings by him. All about biblical woman, there's a certain amount of emotion he infuses in his lyrics and guitarwork that give you this connection to his songs and the people in them. This album also contained quite the variety of music, showing just how many things Samuel Beam can play.

8.
Old:     What's the Story (Morning Glory) - Oasis
New:   Sex, Love & Rock 'n' Roll - Social Distortion
This album was written in tribute to the band's original guitarist Dennis Danell who unfortunately passed away in 2000. The tracks speak about making everyday count, holding true to what you believe, and not taking shit anyone. A pure rock 'n' roll album that captures the attitude of every 70's rocker, in a tribute to a man who never lost the spirit of music. Rock on.

7.
Old:     The Green Album - Weezer
New:   Get Behind Me Satan - The White Stripes
A much more jazz inspired album, GBMS is almost like Jack White taking a little break from his ordinary country/rock/folk/amazing music and mellowing out for 13 songs before jumping right back in. Softer tracks like White Moon and The Nurse are countered by upbeat songs like My Doorbell and The Denial Twist. The man certainly is an enigma, taking from influences left right and centre, and creating something completely different from everything else.

6.
Old:     10,000 Days - Tool
New:   Consolers of the Lonely - The Raconteurs
Ladies and Gentlemen it's a Jack White Double Trouble Bonanza Giveaway Sweepstakes! Consolers of the Lonely is faster, longer, and just overall better than Broken Boy Soldiers. Eerie stories like Carolina Drama, country mixes like Old Enough, and just all around silliness in Consoler of the Lonely give this album a neat little spark that's very rarely seen nowadays. It just feels like it was a fun album to make, and it definitely is to listen to.

5.
Old:     Good News for People Who Love Bad News - Modest Mouse
New:   Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - Arctic Monkeys
Two equally long album names, the Arctic Monkeys debut album brings this pure orgasmic brit-rock ear candy that sounds innocent enough but alludes to abusive bouncers, hookers, and drunkards getting arrested. Rough around the edges, crude, and simply brilliant. Good show.

4.
Old:     The Crane Wife - The Decemberists
New:   Beyond the Horizon - People In Planes
Yes, our previous champions have fallen from 1st, with their 2nd album taking 3rd (numbers are fun). Personally I like this album much better. It seems moodier, deeper, darker, and just has better songs. They cut the 6+ minute songs and instead made shorter, more filled songs, always a better choice. A song should either have as little meaning crammed in, or as much as possible.

3.
Old:     Wolfmother - Wolfmother
New:   Billy Talent III - Billy Talent
It was hard deciding between which Billy Talent album, but I believe the 3rd is indeed the best. It seems much drearier, I'll admit, but also alot more focuses on a certain ideal. The first and second were both trying to pin down a meaning for their songs but would eventually jump around, while this one seems to be able to make what they want known clear. Like a fine wine or a wicked grandpa, Billy Talent will only get better with age.

2.
Old:     Icky Thump - The White Stripes
New:   Like Vines - The Hush Sound
I don't care how girly it is, I love The Hush Sound. I much prefer the songs Bob does rather than Greta, but the duets top either of them solo. Like Vines, the first album of theirs produced by Fueled by Ramen, is a complete smorgasbord of this band's talent. From Lions Roar, a creepy circus song about a missing woman by Bob, to melodic pieces by Greta such as You Are The Moon, to the dual voicework on Don't Wake Me Up, this is a band that knows how to play each singer's unique voice off of one another's. 586 plays from this album on my Last.fm means this is a worthwhile band.

1.
Old:     As Far As The Eye Can See - People in Planes
New:   Plans - Death Cab For Cutie
Yes, the most known, most acclaimed, and most listened to album by DCFC is my #1 pick of the present. There's a reason it's all of those things, it's an amazing album. You can literally pick any song from the album, and less then 15 seconds in I'll be able to sing along to the rest of it. Every song should be a hit in my opinion. A very soulful, elegant album that launched this band's career and showcased the power of a well written song. Ben Gibbard, you have my applause.

There you have it, not a single album from the previous 10 made it onto this list. It just shows how much someone can change in less than a year. New things are discovered, old things are forgotten, tastes change, people change, music changes, but the love of the art and the passion for the medium can never be forgotten, changed, or destroyed.

I'd also like to note that none of my posts have ever been made before 10pm. Damn you sleep deprevation!

music, top 10
