OOM: an assignment

It takes some time, but assignments do start drifting in, once people realise the Guild is back in operation. Most of them seem to be from people who tried to talk through the problems, and perhaps wouldn't have had those problems at all a few months ago. But then, one could say nearly no one had any problems at all, a few months ago.

And look where they are now.

It's not terribly long before an assignment comes in that everyone says is right up Cata's alley: A woman who cannot negotiate with her philandering husband, and requires him removed from society in order to stop disgracing her good standing. The request says it need not be permanent, if the Guild has some way of either getting the man out of town or making the experience linger in his memory; from the sound of things, most everyone agrees it would be far easier to decapitate the man and have done with it.

Cata's not entirely certain she can pull it off, but the only way she's liable to find out is by trying. She takes the assignment, after debating the matter for a while.

Fortunately, she hasn't lost the knack for flirtation, for all she hasn't had much use for it as of late. The man's quite easy to reel in, particularly since he seems almost desperate for someone, anyone, who is female and not his wife. And in that moment, Cata realises how much she's missed this particular facet of her reputation.

He does take her to bed, but she doesn't let matters progress as far as he might like. Oh, she lets him think they are, as that helps her get into the proper frame of mind for carrying out the assignment, but she can't afford to get that fully distracted.

Besides, men are much easier to poison when they're distracted by pleasure.

He lapses into unconsciousness before he can insist that they complete the deed, leaving her to do the job she came in for. The particular poison Cata chose for this job ensures he won't feel a thing from here on. Everyone wins: He ends with a happy memory, the wife's problem is now solved, and Cata gets the satisfaction of a job well done.

It's doubly satisfying, coming as proof she can still do this. Her focus wasn't as strong as she remembers, but it was there, and it should come back in time.
