This is more or less a photo-report of the shenanigans Amity & I got ourselves into last Saturday night.
Being short on time with a budget, but still wanting to show our gratitude in a sentimental and creative way, we decided to make a set of Chrysanthemum (aha, how clever) cupcakes for our mothers, respectively.
Started off with simple vanilla boxed cake mix. This is the only part I'm a teensy weensy ashamed about, I'm so used to making things from scratch, so it just seems like sacrilege! (I know, I know, someone smack me) But we were short on time, and
the people who created this idea said it was best to use the store-bought stuff, so...we went with it, in order to not mess anything up. Maybe I'll experiment from scratch next time. :)
We did, however, make our own colored sugar. :p
Yes, we decided to do a little mixy-matchy and the sugar is alive with the color of the rainboooow!
Meanwhile...what the hell is this? A clan of steroid-filled dustmites? Oh well, we found it in the cupboard and decided to eat it. (before it us)
Amity said she saw it moving. I moved in closer to get a better look and, without me knowing, she blew on it! IT MOVED, AND I FREAKED THE HELL OUT. Gross. So she dealt with preparing them.
(I will spare the disturbing micro shots I took)
Afterwards: A mighty improvement!
Carbs on top of carbs with more carbs, set into a delicate balance by asparagus.
OKAY, so. We used mini marshmallows, cut diagonally, and then dipped the sticky side into the colored sugar. VERY VERY SIMPLE, and the result looks pretty decent too!
The ones Amity gave to her momma. They really look like 'mums in full bloom!
My first three. I was a little reserved with the petals in the beginning:
The rest of the lot
More artsy fartsy close-up pics
All right, I caved and got white roses for mum. Keepin' it classy. :)
Overall, I'm proud to say the cupcakes were a success! and we had a blast decorating them.
Movies watched: Frailty (while baking) and LOTR: Return of the King (while decorating). Hmm, movies featuring mentally-unstable dads, how...fitting for Mother's Day? Oh dear, that was not our initial intention!
