Summary: Early reports on werewolf attack
Completion: Complete
A large pack of werewolves attacked last night in Diagon and Knockturn Alley, leaving St. Mungo's full of victims.
Mary McDonald, Ministry Press Secretary, said that it was too early for concrete numbers, but that the Ministry is working with St. Mungo's to have an accurate head count.
"Victims of both the werewolf attack and the mass panic that the attack created began arriving at St. Mungo's a little before 9 PM. Aurors, Hit Wizards and members of the Werewolf Capture Unit were dispatched throughout the area," she said.
St. Mungo's spokesperson said the injuries coming in ranged from minor bruises to bites to dismemberment. At last count there were close to 100 injured and had or were receiving treatment at the hospital.
"While we are still in the process of cleaning up, there have been at least half a dozen reported deaths," McDonald said.
During the melee at least one Auror, Athena McGonagall, who most recently came to fame for her heroic deeds at the Battle at the North Pole last December, was brutally attacked and killed by 3 werewolves.
Magical Law Enforcement Department Head JJ Simon said McGonagall died with her boots on.
"She was a brave Auror who died in the line of duty," he said. "Our thoughts are with her family at this unfortunate time."
Despite recent string of robberies afflicting the area, both Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley were in full swing as members of the wizarding community went out for supper, shopped and mingled. Simon said there was not way the Ministry could have anticipated this kind of attack.
"There were at least nine werewolves that strategically planned out an attack on the good people of London. While we were able to capture or kill most of them, at least one of two got away," Simon said.
There are conflicting stories about the number of werewolves involved based on eye witness accounts, but Simon said both Aurors and Hit Wizards are working together to take statements and find out the reason behind the attack.
