Nev wasn't sure how many other folks had been invited, but figured he'd bring a bag of crips and a small case of ale just in case. Never was good to run out of food at a party. He had drawn a blank on what to get Harry, so instead made up a voucher for a day's worth of free gardening and landscaping. Hermione had asked him a while back if he could help them with the gardens and greenhouse space at Grimmauld Place, but they'd never connected on it.

He knocked and stuck his head inside, wondering if he was early.

A moment later Ron ran onto the scene, looking a very interesting shade of red; that paired with the fact that he hadn't gotten a chance to freshen up after his nap made him... Well, something of a mess. Luckily Neville was used to that sort of thing from Ron; he hadn't cared much for his appearance at Hogwarts, and that hadn't completely changed.

"Neville, hullo!" The words were loud, and jolly; almost as if he weren't on the verge of having his head torn off.

"You --"

Hermione gaped, her mouth opening and closing fish-like as she stared at Ron.

"You what?" There was this sudden, dull ringing in her ears that blocked out the sound of a knock at the door, and Hermione wasn't sure if she'd gone pale or bright red with anger. Of course, the moment her senses came about her, Hermione was storming after Ron, to the front door, shouting all the while.

"Of all the -- the simplest tasks. The simplest thing I ask you to do and you -- oh." Hermione stopped at the door, noticing the new arrival and deeming him harmless. "Hello Neville. Glad to see you!" Reaching out, she wrapped her arms around him. "Happy birthday to you as well!" Then, she gave Ron that look that said they were far from finished with this conversation.

Neville blinked at Hermione, reminded of the bickering she and Ron had done at Hogwarts. It had been a while since he's seen them go at it but since they were shelving it on his arrival, he played along.

"Hello Hermione. Good seeing you again." He patted her back as she hugged him. "Thanks. When will Harry be here?" He'd much rather the attention be on him, really.

Neville blinked at Ron, taking his flustered and disheveled state. He wondered momentarily what had gotten him into looking like that, but then dismissed it as not his business. Besides, it likely would become more obvious as the evening went on. Ron didn't exactly hide his emotions under a basket.

"Hullo. 'm I early? Brought reinforcements." He held up the refreshments.

"There's a table -- back there," said Ron, pointing. He'd been doing an awfully good job of behaving as though Hermione didn't exist, and it got a bit difficult after her grand entrance; for one reason or another he hadn't really expected her to come storming after him like that. Giving Neville a sheepish grin, he shrugged. "Good to see you, mate."

Nev nodded, taking the foodstuff and setting it down. "Likewise. How's it been? Still in Auror training, yeah?" Had been far too long since they'd hung out as mates.

"Yeah."

Ron grinned loosely, running a hand through longish hair. "Still in. I feel like it's been forever, you know? And you've got ... your greenhouse and everything, still?"

Nev laughed. "Listen to us. We sound like a pair of wankers, asking about work and stuff. Come on, let's grab a drink and you can tell me the important stuff." He moved closer and lowered his voice. "Like why you and Hermione are hissing like you did before you broke up. Thought everything was alright?"

Ron sighed heavily. "I dunno. She's got all on edge about the party. We tried planning it together and well -- I mean, obviously there is one, so we sort of worked it out, but I forgot to invite my parents. Which really she barely told me was my job -- since she wrote out all the invitations -- so I dunno what she's so upset about."

Well... Really he did understand quite well -- Hermione liked things just so most of the time -- but a part of him wasn't comfortable with acknowledging it aloud.

"She's been upset a bloody lot lately."

Neville frowned. Hermione had seemed out of sorts when he ran into her at the bookstore as well. Whatever was bothering her then still was.

"Yeah, I noticed. Reckon between us if we're seeing it, it's a whole load worse." He pursed his lips. "I should talk to her. See if she'll tell me something."

Then Seamus stumbled in, and it was all Neville could do to not laugh at him.

"You noticed?" Ron looked honestly concerned; the moment he realised this, though, he coughed and looked away.

Thank Merlin for Seamus.

Nev nodded, diverted by Seamus's entrance. He clapped Ron on the shoulder and turned away to get a drink. He wanted something to drink while he watched the fireworks.
