Characters: Dean Thomas and Gawain Robards Location: Ministry Date: 30 March 2000 Status: Private Summary: Dean meets with Robards. Completion: Complete
Robards had to stop and speak with the new Department Head, a man her respected and thought would due well at the job, mainly because he wasn't a bureaucrat. After his brief meeting her headed back to his office for his interview with the eager young man. Walking around a curve, Robards nodded to the bloke sitting in the chair outside his office.
"Thomas?" he asked as he crossed over holding out his hand. "Gawain Robards."
Dean shook his head. "Sir. Pleasure to meet you," he said politely. This bloke looked like an Auror, a bad ass, someone who didn't take shit, Dean liked that.
After shaking the young man's hand, Robards lead him into his office. "You can sit there," he said pointing to the single chair place directly in front of his desk, which had several folders and pieces of parchments stacked up.
Dean took a seat and had to hide a chuckle. Brash, this one.
"Because I want to help people, more than I want to do anything else. I fought in the war, I was on the run, things like that don't scare me. I've seen a lot more than most people and I want to put it to good use."
Robards looked at the younger wizard for a moment before standing and crossing around his desk. "You got your NEWT scores?" he asked as he took a seat in the chair. "Hand them over."
Dean handed them over, knowing what he was going to say. Everything was in order, except potions. As if it had been Dean's fault that Snape was a grade A git and a half.
Taking the parchment, Robards looked over the marks. Majority look to be in order, only the potions grade was lacking. "Tell me what happened with Potions."
"Didn't get into the N.E.W.T. course. Snape wouldn't take anyone unless they scored an 'O' on the O.W.L. I got an E..." he held off mentioning that Snape was a greasy git, he didn't think it was relevant to this conversation.
Robards nodded, yet he frowned. "Potions is a requirement, you know that?" He put down the parchment and looked at the young man. No point in lying to him.
"You could find a potion master to teach you, but you're looking at another year before you have the right skills to even apply," he said frankly. "Although, if you were interested in becoming a Hit Wizard, I can help you right now."
He's willing to wait. Robards thought that was a good sign; showed that they young man understood the sacrifices he would need to make in order to make it as an Auror.
Frowning, he shook his head. "Kill? No, no. A Hit Wizard is the position below Auror. They handle more of the every day criminals. Stolen goods, domestics, that kind of thing. Training is only about 3 months and you don't need potions for it."
"That's a bad name for it... sorry, but in the Muggle-never mind." Dean thought for a moment. So... be a cop or a detective, that was basically what the difference was, or something close to it.
"I think I'd rather wait," he wanted the whole deal.
"Thomas?" he asked as he crossed over holding out his hand. "Gawain Robards."

Raising an eyebrow, he looked back at him. "Hit wizard... like... kill people?" He asked, feeling a bit uncomfortable with the idea.
