She smiled, pleased. It had to be a killjoy, to know your girlfriend was more attentive to school than to her boyfriend, but Dennis could wait. NEWTs couldn't. It was the rest of her life, even if she thought he might be too.
She gave him a look, curious. "I like working at The Leaky Cauldron. Tom was nice enough to hire me, and it gives me a chance to see some friends I wouldn't see otherwise." She didn't understand this sudden aversion. She'd worked there last summer, what was the problem.
She gave his hand another squeeze. "Bet this time next year you'll be missing the dairy. Cows are much easier than dragons." She teased.
"Yes." She was pleased he wanted to get back to studying. "I'm trying to get some more of the theory and history behind the Muggle-Repelling Charms, and the Fidelius. They have to be related somehow, the way they work." She pulled out one of the book she'd checked out and settled in to read the chapter she thought would best answer the questions. Only, the ground was too hard, and it was distracting her. She wriggled, looking around, until she spied a fist-sized rock. She took out her wand and concentrated on transfiguring it into a pillow. She saw another, and did the same, passing it to Dennis before settling herself.
Dennis merely grunted. "I understand wanting to see your friends," he said. "Just..." His voice trailed off, he wasn't going to say that. "Never mind."
Dennis shook his head. "Cows maybe easier, but dragons a ten times cooler."
Thanking Orla as she handed him a pillow, he shoved it under himself. "I think the same magical principles apply to both charms, you know the repelling part."
Orla frowned, but wasn't sure she should prod it out of him. It clearly made him grouchy, so she just let it go for now. Studying was more pressing.
"Well, technically they're hotter." She teased. "But yes, I know. Its a good start, shows you can adapt to animal behavior, working at the dairy."
"Yes, but I'm trying to find where it says the oath was added to make the repelling broader in its applications, to include magical folk." She looked at her book, and continued reading, muttering a little under her breath.
Grateful that she dropped the Leaky issue, Dennis got more comfortable on his pillow. The fact was, he couldn't explain it; why the idea of her work at the Leaky upset him. Liar. You don't want anyone looking at your girl. he thought.
He laughed at her tease. "No, you are." he teased back as he flipped through his notes to the Fidelius.
She stuck her tongue out at him. "Clearly I'm cut out to work with animals, after all my time with you." She teased.
"Not quite." She drummed her fingers on the page. "That's the important part, but the oath essentially makes it so the repelling part of the spell has broader applications. It's the strongest type of concealment charm out there. Strong enough that wizards can't get past it, no unless they get to the secret keeper. Which is just sloppy, if you ask me. Making a person the key." She frowned at the text.
"Yep, cause I'm such an animal," he teased before leaning over and giving her a quick nip along her neck.
Dennis shrugged. "Well, if you didn't have a secret keeper and remember you can be a secret keeper, the magic would repel you the moment you stepped out of the building," he said. "I mean, if I wasn't the secret keeper and Fidelius was cast and I left the building, I wouldn't know how to get back. You'd have to be stuck inside that house until you lifted it."
Orla squeaked when Dennis's teeth scraped over a sensitive spot. She shivered.
Orla considered. "That's true. I hadn't thought of it in those terms. Anchoring the magic to a person so that it's not a fully self-supporting and recirculating shield." She grinned at Dennis, excited. Her boyfriend was brilliant, even if he didn't think so. She leaned over and gave him a kiss. "Absolutely brilliant."
Chuckling as he moved back to his position, he continued to flip through the notes, not really paying attention. He was just happy to be outside for a little while.
Since he wasn't truly paying attention, he was surprised when she leaned over and kissed him. "What?" he asked before bring his hand up and cradling the back of her head before stealing one more.
Dennis was still in a slight fog about what he was so brilliant about, but since she was giving him a kiss every time she said a word, he wasn't going to say anything.
"Must be you rubbing off on me," he said when she finished. Giving her a smile, he went back to his notes and was quiet, so that she could concentrate on what she wanted.
She snorted, but wasn't going to argue, if that was what he wanted to think. She continued to work on her reading, taking notes, until her stomach rumbled, signaling the need for sustenance.
Dennis rolled his eyes as he thought, She always does this. He gave her a little tickle at her midsection in the hopes of distracting her enough to get an answer.

"Hungry?" he asked, realizing he wasn't wearing his watch, so he couldn't check the time. "Bet the Great Hall is open."

"Your stomach's growling. I thought you might want to head in and get something to eat." he said, defensively.
