Hermione was tense. She knew she was tense. She knew she looked tense. She knew that everyone there had known she was tense, which only served to make her tenser still. The tension did not go away simply because she and Draco had left his parents to take a tour their home. In fact, it only served to increase Hermione's anxiety.

Before last night, she'd been slightly nervous but not particularly tense about the introduction to his mother, which Draco had told her would take place in his mother's family home. Then last night, the platinum ferret that was her boyfriend, decided he should 'probably tell her' that the location had been changed and not only would she be introduced to Narcissa but also to Lucius and the introduction would occur at Malfoy Manor. Hermione had been more than a little upset with him over springing it on her like that, even more so because apparently he'd known all week and hadn't had the bollocks to tell her right away. It wasn't that Hermione had found it particularly frightening encountering his parents ( ... )

Oh, god. Her voice. It was, if possible, more tightly strung than it had been during the conversation earlier, and Draco felt the back of his neck tightening up in response. Her anxiety almost seemed to transfer to him through her fingers, and he was a little lost about how to help. It was his fault, a good portion of it, because he hadn't bothered to tell her the location was switching, but he'd had good intentions. He thought they'd been. He hadn't wanted to tell her ahead of time, because he hadn't wanted her to have an entire week to fret.

Her reaction when he'd finally told her, though.... Draco forced himself to hide the grimace he wanted to make just recalling it. Perhaps he should have let her fret. "Nowhere with purple walls," he said, trying to keep his voice low and soothing. "And absolutely not that room. Love, I don't go in there if I can avoid it." He started to reach for her other hand as well, then realized with her nervousness, it was best to allow her to keep her wand-hand free. Instead, he cradled the ( ... )

"Stop sucking up, Malfoy. I'll be fine. I had to do this sooner or later, right? I just wish I'd had time to mentally prepare myself is all." Hermione took a deep breath and looked up at him. She couldn't change things now and her tension wasn't making this any easier on Draco either.

"Library. There's a library isn't there? Maybe a walk outside first though. Perhaps the peacocks will try to carry you off and I can have a laugh over it. You look as if you could use a smoke too." Hermione knew she was mental when she enabled his smoking.

"I wasn't," he said, just on the verge of sullen, because he had been a little bit and she'd caught him out at it. "You are beautiful, and you look especially lovely today. Not that you don't look lovely every day, but you look extra lovely today, it's pretty obvious you took some effort. I mean, not obvious, not to anyone but me, and for god's sake, shut up, Malfoy." Draco sighed and let go of her hand to rub his forehead, cursing himself silently.

"Library. Yes. Definitely. We can take a walk if you like, though I do intend to hex any peacocks that get within thirty feet of me, thank you very much." He didn't press too hard on the snippishness of that from her. She was anxious and upset, and she deserved to be a little bitchy at her uncommunicative boyfriend. She was very anxious if she was encouraging him to have a cigarette. Draco spoke to the air, demanding their wraps, and a house-elf appeared instantly. It handed him their garments and disappeared just as quickly, and Draco tossed his cloak on a decorative side ( ... )

When Hermione asked Madam Goshawk's advice on her formal introduction to Draco's mother, Madam had been kind but very clear in making sure Hermione understood how her involvement with the Malfoy heir meant the end of the Malfoy and Black lines whether or not she and Draco had children. It had vaguely registered with her when Draco had said before that he was the end of line but she thought he meant more figuratively as in the last Pure-blood. Apparently not. The name would continue but once the purity was compromised, it would no longer be the same. Madam explained that there were no Goshawks after W.H. There were no Potters after James. And there would be no Malfoys after Draco. Their children could be given the family name but they could not continue the line. Nothing could change that. Madam had told her though not to let it bother her, because she had never seen someone brought up as Draco had been make the choice to end his line lightly. Hermione comforted herself with knowing that love was more important, but it didn't make her ( ... )

Draco watched her quietly, wondering what was running through her head. As much as he knew about her, and was learning all the time, there was plenty he didn't. Plenty he couldn't. They'd been born and raised so differently that he suspected there were things about her that he would never be able to comprehend at all. It was probably the same for her. As often as he told her that she was more important to him than the lineage, he wondered if she really knew what that meant. If she ever would. He supposed he'd just have to keep showing her, over and over, no matter how many times it took in the years to come. Draco cupped her cheek and leaned down to give her a soft kiss. "I love you," he murmured. "That's all we need to worry about right now. I love you and I already love our kids, even though they're in the future. It's just fact ( ... )

"I love you, too." His soft kiss helped. She needed to snap out of it and focused on doing just that.

Hermione snickered. "I thought your father was going to spill his coffee when you told your mother we agreed that having four was enough." Honestly, that had been a highlight. Narcissa Malfoy looked as if Christmas had come early, despite Hermione clarifying that she didn't intent to start having children until after she'd established herself in her career.

"Does she only grow warm climate orchids then? Never mind, Malfoy. I don't expect you know. I'm surprised she has violets in the greenhouse, though." Hermione would have thought his mother would consider them too common.

Draco grinned, preferring to concentrate on keeping each other amused than on the tense meeting before. "Honestly, he's probably just dreading tonight's conversation. Or the next few weeks. Who knows? Mum's thrilled about the idea of grandchildren, she'll be chattering about that for a while, most likely. I always used to talk about just having my heir. Just the one. Think she was always a little disappointed about that. I know she wanted more than just me, but that ... er. That didn't happen. So even two's really more than she'd hoped for, y'know? Then we say we've already pretty well decided on four? Surprised she didn't die of joy right then ( ... )
