Narcissa pinched the bridge of her nose. "Mimpsy," she called softly for her personal elf. "I need you to ready the downstairs sitting room in our old house. On second thought, it might be best that entire house be aired and seen to, I may have need of it soon. Do not mention this to the Malfoy elves," she told her. Narcissa did not wish Lucius to know. Hopefully, this feud between her husband and son would work its way out. However, if it did not, she would need a place to go. Better to see to it now and give her elf time to set the house to rights than to put it off. "You are excused," she sent her off.

Dear Draco,

Malfoy Manor belongs to the Malfoy family, of which your father is head. I would not make him uncomfortable by inviting guests he would prefer not be in his home. I likewise doubt that to do so would be a comfortable experience for Miss Granger.

I asked for an introduction, not an interview, however I am not opposed to grilling your young lady if you like. As it seems you are looking forward to this being a traditional affair, I am having my parents' home made ready so that you may conduct a proper presentation.

Would you care to set a date to bring Miss Granger to meet me?

Mother,
Introduction, interview, interrogation. Call it what you like. I expected that this would be more than a cup of tea and a how-do-you-do. Miss Granger is a very important and close to permanent person in my life; I'm sure you want to know more about her than her name and bloodline. Start the ball rolling, as it were, for any future engagements.

While I'm not certain the Black home would be any more comfortable ground for her than the Manor, unless you manage to silence any and all of the portraits and remove any 'security', I appreciate your provisions. Less unfortunate memories, for one. For another, she's very fond of architecture and history. Seeing the house would be a treat for her.

If you are free, I suggest the 14th. We both work through the week.

Dear Draco,

I wonder if Miss Granger is so important to you why you wish to set your father further against her relationship with you than draw him closer to understanding what you see in her? You see, it appears as if she is having a bad influence on you and your manners that you would taunt the man who raised you, rather than exhibiting subtlety and cunning in bringing him around to your point of view.

The portraits will be restricted. They have already been informed of my views as the family tapestry is currently there and on the mend. The 14th will be excellent. I will give me ample time to see that things are safe for your young lady. Shall we do luncheon instead of tea? It would give us more time to become acquainted.

All my love,
Mother

Mum,
I would be happy to have my father back. I would be thrilled to have my father in my life. But what I have isn't him. This isn't my father. This is Lucius Malfoy. This is a man so blindly focused on his lineage and his bloodline that he'll -- he can't see anything past it. There's nothing I can say to convince him. The only bright spot here is that now he's not a favored lapdog to a madman; he's well on his way to becoming the madman himself. I know this is painful, I know this is shredding our family, and I'm sorry. But I have to choose between families now, and if I can find happiness and desire and the hope for children with a Muggle-born, I would a million times rather have that than a civil, matrimonial duty and a pristine, pure line. Times have changed, I've changed. He can't. And he won't.

Draco
--Luncheon will be fine.
