It was early for there to be customers in the shop, although that was a point of little relevance. What had struck both Aurelia and Mr Ollivander quite dumb was the red envelope that had been deposited on the shop counter before the owl took flight again.

She wouldn't.

The owl's departure had been for effect, of course. Now someone simply had to pick up the envelope. Funny how no one seemed willing. Least of all the person it was addressed to. And now she was getting very odd looks since the clientèle had realised the Howler was for her and had not been misdirected.

Oh, but she did.

And it wasn't exactly a secret (or rather, had not been kept as such for very long) that she had gone to the Gala with Draco Malfoy and left with Anthony Goldstein, so this little tirade had only been a matter of time, really. Surprising that she had taken so long to react, actually. Damara Montgomery seemed to have spies in every corner; otherwise known as gossip-mongers.

Whatever happened to that 'good breeding', Mama?

With a polite nod and an apologetic smile to Ollivander, Aurelia seized the envelope. It sprung to life on contact (AURELIA MEGAERA MONTGOMERY, WHAT EXACTLY WERE YOU THINKING? WERE YOU THINKING AT ALL? DO YOU HAVE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST IDEA WHAT YOU'VE-), but she refused to react to any of its accusations - however many times her mother used her full name - until she was safely in the back room with no one there to see her lose her temper. At least she had managed to get the door locked and the room silenced before the core of the problem began to surface.

“THINK YOU NOTHING OF THE MALFOY FAMILY NAME? OF YOUR OWN FAMILY NAME? OR ARE YOU SO PRESUMPTUOUS AS TO PLACE YOURSELF ABOVE THE REST OF US? HAVE YOU ANY IDEA HOW THIS MAY HAVE INSULTED THE BOY'S PARENTS?”

'The boy', she could only assume was Draco, and the way he'd been referred to was insulting in itself, but her mother had a point about his parents. She made a mental note of that and waited for the next onslaught, crushing her hands between her knees in anticipation of a sudden urge to shoot the message.

“AND WHO IS THIS OTHER YOUNG GENTLEMAN?” Aurelia winced, expecting to receive a lecture on the many reasons why she could never be seen near Anthony again. Instead, the Howler went quiet for a moment and then Damara's voice spoke up again, decidedly friendlier than before. “Really, 'Lia, you ought to tell me that you're acquainted with other young men - it's a relief to hear that you're socialising properly again. You know how much I worry that you're not making the effort with friends-”

The rest sort of washed over Aurelia in a haze of propriety as realisation dawned: She doesn't know. And it had probably not occurred to her mother that Anthony was anything less than pureblooded. She relaxed for a moment, staring at the Howler as it said its goodbyes. Then guilt hit her like a brick in the face. She wasn't going to let her mother believe Anthony was something he wasn't in the same way she wasn't go to make Anthony lie or live up to anyone else's expectations. Especially her mother's.

Besides, she would find out eventually.

But that - she brushed the envelope into the bin - could wait until she'd finished at work.
