Luna was still shaking grass from her hair when she Apparated to Godric's Hollow. She did not mind the gnomes having their fun as long as it didn't involve stealing her wand while she was distracted. That was rather rude.

Twisting her hair up into a knot, she pinned it in place with her wand. Perhaps that would hide any remaining grass. She added a pencil and a clean quill after further thought, realising that if she needed her wand her hair would do as it pleased and that was often inconvenient. Spellcasting was harder when one could not see to aim.

"Zach," Luna beamed as she caught site of him by the pub. "I'm sorry if I'm late; gnomes took my watch in exchange for my wand."

Luna arrived in a disheveled pop and Zach watched with amusement as she fixed her hair up and stuck her wand, quill and pencil into it he guess to hold it up. Although he did think, it was very pretty down.

“Hi Luna, don’t worry about it. I haven’t been waiting long.” He blinked, finding her explanation a little different before he responded. “So how did you negotiate the return of your wand? I’m just curious as to what interests a gnome?”

"Visuals? ... The watch is bright pink," Luna said, gazing off to one side as she considered the question. Her wand was certainly not quite as aesthetically pleasing. She had not really taken the time to really watch the behavioural patterns of gnomes. That was another thing to add to her To Do List. "I don't think they liked the way it misfired, though."

She snapped out of that trail of thought and smiled, "Have you discovered any more variables?"

“You gave them your watch?” Zach looked at her incredulously, why would she give them something so valuable? Still the idea of the wand backfiring on the gnomes made him laugh. “Well maybe next time your wand won’t seem so enticing. I wouldn’t want it getting away from you.”

He grinned but shook his head. “Not yet but I have the idea of comparing this new census to the ones done in the past. Perhaps there is a pattern. What do you think?”

There was a certain logic to Luna that Zach liked, sure she didn't always run in the realm of the believable but at least it wasn't just random faith. Perhaps he had run that day so he could survive to do something later in life. Not something he wanted to dwell on now but later he might give it a closer look.

"I don't know meaning in my life, connections. I have not seen my family since the end of the war." He said mostly to himself. Just saying it made it more real. There were a few owls from his mum that he read and reread all the time and that was it.

Zach couldn't believe it in less than a decade, the Ministry had changed even in minuet ways. "Luna? How much do you remember from History of magic? Anything important between the years 1903 and 1911?"

This one one subject that often caused Luna to fall short. Discovering the meaning of something was rather different than finding a meaning for something. In her opinion, the meaning of life was always subject to the individual's need for meaning, otherwise you were left with a mass of people who were apparently following a path already set out for them, each one of them affecting the others in ways they were never going to fathom. Technically, each individual was utterly insignificant and they could only ever mean anything when the whole race was brought into question. But that was probably not what Zach wanted to hear and also a tangent that did not need to be voiced ( ... )

Zach cocked his head a Luna talked, he wasn't exactly sure what she was talking about, but thought that it was very nice that she had at least tried to explained her point to him.

"You might be right, I guess I am just still finding my place in this world. I used to think I was going to be the perfect pureblood son and now I'm trying to figure out who to be now."

Maybe something as simpled as someone with an idea had come to the Ministry and had started to spread their influence. Opening the next book Zach found a census from 1922 the last question asked Is there anyone in your home over the age of five not able to practice magic "Ok this one was certainly a target question for squib, but they don't really do things to squibs other than bar them from Hogwarts, right?"

"What is a perfect pureblood?" Even though Luna believed it was impossible to be a perfect anything, as a pureblooded daughter she was at a loss. Her father had never set her the standards or limitations that seemed to have been imposed on many of her schoolmates. "Just be Zach. You don't need to be anybody else."

Luna shook her head, "They're still part of the community. But it's possible they were trying to establish how many practicing witches and wizards there were." She wasn't very convinced by that and she didn't sound it; but it was a possibility. "Some of the older families must have hated that question," she said absently.

Zach nodded, since becoming more exposed to muggles he found he had more in common with them than not. These were not things that had been talked about in muggle studies or even at home. School had made them sound like curious creatures not anything like wizards.

"Yeah and their food is like ours too. Muggles here drink ales and lagers stronger stuff than say butter beer but they have sodas and their sweet and refreshing with no alcohol." He grinned as she considered battered fish. "Oh that's just fish and chips batter is the stuff that the fish is fried in. Good stuff you should try it."

He personally liked the steak and kidney pie.

"Oh. Alright, I think I will..." Luna took a sip from her water and then leaned back to shake out her hair again. There was still grass in it somewhere, she knew that, but not she was also covered in dust. Or the smell just wouldn't leave her nose alone. One or the other. Maybe both.

Glancing down at her bag, she poked at the wand-handle that threatened to make its presence known and shoved it back out of sight.

"What are you having?"

He watched as Luna shook out her hair, and Zach wondered if she was aware of how cute she was. There was a slight smudge on her cheek and he couldn't help but reach out to brush it off. "You've got a bit if dust right there." He explained.

Seeing her pushed down her wand handle made Zach instinctively check for his down but it was still neatly tucked up his sleeve. He looked back down at the menu before answering her question.

"I'm trying to decide between the steak and kidney pie and the toad in the whole. I'm sure both would be good though."

Blinking, Luna looked at Zach. She had the distinct impression her cheeks were turning pink. "Thank you," she smiled, but she automatically reached up to brush both cheeks off, just in case.

"It's not a real toad, is it?" A rhetorical question. It couldn't be a real toad. She had heard that the French ate frogs' legs and the English considered that strange, so being completely fine with eating toads just didn't make sense. Luna felt a little out of her depth here - in a pub, of all places - but that didn't make it any less exciting.

He grinned as Luna admitted liking wild goose chases and made the mental note to ask her again should the penchant grabbed him. The server arrived and he placed their orders along with two glasses of cola, figuring Luna would like the bubbles.

“Thanks, just let me know when you are free, I know you have your apprenticeship to keep you busy.”
