Now allow me to ramble on about my imagined backstory for this alternate version.

Pike doesn't have the bug attached to his spine, because Nero never got to finish his interrogation -- he was interrupted midway by the Serenity ramming the back of the Narada, at the same time Spock and Uhura beamed aboard, guns ablazing, as it were, and freed Pike while Nero and co. were flailing about trying to deal with this totally unexpected damage. And then Spock and Uhura and Pike are badasses and save the day. Again! So no slug. Which is kind of a shame, really, since truth serums would only make their interaction more interesting, but Kirk has his ways, lol.
