This morning, I was feeling ranty that women aren't encouraged to work out with weights. Resistance training? Sure, you'll carry things better, have better balance, build bone mass you are really going to need. But you might end up looking like a strong person, and we can't have that for a woman ( Read more... )

I think I must be reading the "wrong" stuff, because most of the food/exercise/health blogs I read encourage strength training (for all genders) over cardio... And for the record, it's pretty hard for women to end up all muscley unless you're realllllly working for it. Mostly women just look toned and healthy.

I've been exposed to "women's fitness" stuff about as long as I can read (no thanks there, mother). In the past few years, there has definitely been an uptick in the idea that people should weight train ( ... )

I haven't come across the attitude that women shouldn't do weights in case they end up looking too manly, but then I never read fitness advice aimed at women. I do believe in trying to maintain my upper body strength as I get older, so I've been doing exercises with arm weights for several years but the weights are only a couple of kg each.

Aha, yeah, I know a lot of my friends at school are always too afraid that they'll get muscular to really do weight training. I guess it's just not an aesthetic that's valued? Because it's not considered "feminine" but ... eh. Do what makes you feel good, etc etc.

Also this is Anna/dalmasca! I changed my name like two and a half months ago but you only started posting again recently so I'm just going to assume you don't know who I am XD.
