Chapter 5
Junsu and Yoochun rushed into the hospital, lookingaround hurriedly to see if they could find anyone they recognized. The media was outside, taking pictures, asking for interviews, and pressing for information. They looked like a small swarm of flies, hovering around a juicy piece of meat. Junsu was a mess; he looked pale and his eyes were red from crying on the way over. Yoochun felt he had to hold it together for him, so remained in a stony silence the whole drive. They had received a phone call from their manager was surreal but Yoochun quickly pulled Junsu away from his family and they were now in the heart of the city where the main hospital was located.
Leaving his love for the moment, Yoochun went up to the receptionist and smiled politely at her. He felt his lips trembling all the while, and cleared his throat in order to speak.
“Could you please tell me where I might find Kim Jaejoong's room?” he asked.
Nodding, she pulled out a file and flipped through it and pointed in the direction of the room. “Just down to the left. It's room 1-34C. There's a waiting room there as well. Please speak to the nurse there and she can let you know if he can have visitors.”
Yoochun led Junsu down the hall and was immediately greeted by their manager. He looked solemn and worried, and already the stress lines were appearing on his forehead.
“How is he?” Junsu demanded.
“For the most part he's fine. The driver lost control of her car and couldn't get it to brake fast enough. A broken arm, some scrapes and bruises, a minor concussion, and a couple of cracked ribs. The doctor said it could have been worse and he's lucky. If that woman hadn't managed to stop her car, it would have rolled right over him, killing them both most likely. That's the work of guardian angels, that's for sure.”
“Can we see him?” Yoochun asked, Junsu squeezing his hand tightly.
“The doctor wants to do some more tests before he can have visitors, but he should be almost done,” their manager replied. He rubbed his eyes. “Thank god it was just one of you and not all three. I don't know what I would do then. You're like my sons, and if anything happened to you....”
“How did you find out?” Junsu asked suddenly.
The manager shrugged. “The paramedics called me and told me he had been in an accident. They said there was another man there with him, but he left angrily, after telling them to call me. Wouldn't give his name, and I have no idea who he was.”
Junsu and Yoochun didn't say anything but they knew exactly who it was. The only thing was; if he was so concerned with Jaejoong's safety why didn't he come to the hospital as well? Why did he leave in such a hurry? They glanced at each other nervously but didn't say anything for fear of arousing suspicion in their manager.
Suddenly the doctor came into the room and looked at them the way a doctor normally does. Without much emotion and in a very professional manner. “He's in his room now if you'd like to see him. He's awake but very groggy from the meds so I don't think you'll get much out of him. When he falls asleep I do ask that you don't wake him up; he needs all the rest he can for now.”
Thanking the doctor, the three men walked into the room and they were instantly greeted by a pale, small figure on the lone hospital bed. Jaejoong looked so small in the bed, so vulnerable and delicate. His face was pale and his hair was matted with sweat. He had an IV tube in his arm, and a breathing apparatus in his nose. His left arm was fitted with a cast and under his shirt they could see the outlines of a bandage to hold the cracked ribs in place. His eyes were half closed and he looked in desperate need of sleep. But when he saw Yoochun, Junsu and his manager walk in he lifted his good arm and smiled slightly. Junsu stepped forward and gripped the hand tightly, and smoothed back his hair gently from his forehead.
“Hey,” Jaejoong whispered. He sounded tired and groggy. Junsu squeezed his hand tighter. “Why do you look sad? That's not a very befitting look for you Su.”
Junsu scofffed slightly. “It's because I care for you. Don't ever do this again, you hear me?”
Yoochun came up and patted Jaejoong's shoulder and smiled assuredly at him. “Thank god you're alright.”
“Where's Yunho?” Jaejoong asked suddenly.
The manager looked at the other two and he shook his head. “Haven't seen him son. Look, just get some rest and don't worry about anything for now, except your recovery. I'm going to put JYJ's performances on hold for the time being.” He hurried away to get started on all the business, leaving the three singers alone
together.
Jaejoong leaned his head back and closed his eyes, but Yoochun caught his attention again. “Do you mind telling us what's going on with Yunho and you? It was him who told the paramedics to call wasn't it? You were with him before the accident.”
Looking back at them, Jaejoong nodded slightly. “Yeah, I was. But it wasn't his fault, he didn't do anything. I
just need to see him and tell him that. I think he might have left because of that....”
“That is not the reason,” someone said from behind them.
A woman, with short black hair and bright eyes approached them and stood firmly at the end of Jaejoong's bed. She only addressed Jaejoong, who looked ready to pass out at any moment. But he struggled to keep awake and listened to this stranger.
“I had been hoping to find him with you, but it seems like he's already gone into action,” she sighed, “my name is Koda. I am the angels' prophetess. I came to warn Yunho of the dangers he was putting himself-and you, Jaejoong-in, but I am too late. He is going to stop Rain, but he cannot do it alone.”
“Wait...you said a prophetess...for the angels?” Yoochun clarified, “and you're looking for Yunho. Which means....”
“Which means Yunho is an angel, and he was destined to fall in love with Jaejoong,” Koda affirmed. She looked grimly at the young man in the bed. “I have to do what Boa couldn't-wouldn't-do. You cannot be involved in this any further-.”
“I'm sorry but if Yunho's in danger I just can't sit back and let him get hurt,” Jaejoong interrupted. He still looked dreary but there was a determination in his eyes that almost washed away the grogginess. “Boa said I had a role to do, and I don't think it was just to fall in love with Yunho. I'm going after him.”
“Hyung!” Junsu gasped, at the same time Yoochun said, “you can't do that!”
“I have to,” Jaejoong muttered, sitting up slowly. He swayed slightly and Yoochun reached out to hold him up. Jaejoong didn't fight him but his face coloured slightly. “I'm fine-really. Please, Yoochun, Junsu, let me go to him.”
“Not now,” Yoochun said softly, “you can barely sit up and you look ready to pass out at any moment. Just rest for a little bit and then we'll discuss it.”
Jaejoong regarded him for a moment and then nodded stiffly. Koda watched them silently and then turned to the couple and sighed. “When he's rested, make sure you make plans. I know Boa's plans for you two and I am willing to help you in any way I can. For now, I must leave and continue looking for Yunho.”
“Why isn't Boa telling us all this?” Junsu asked suddenly.
Koda paused in the doorway and her straight shoulders sagged slightly. “She was taken by Rain a few hours ago. The only thing left is to fight as hard as we can.”
She left, and Jaejoong rested his head back on the pillow, his face paler than it was before. Junsu and Yoochun traded nervous glances and they were all thinking the same thing: with Boa gone, what was going to happen next?
☪
Yunho paced the living room, brow furrowed and eyes boring deep into the carpet under his feet. Changmin sat on the couch like a statue, his face pale and his body rigid. The only movement he made was with his eyes, as they followed Yunho back and forth. The only sound that was heard was a clock from the kitchen, ticking and tocking endlessly. The coffee table had been thrown carelessly against the wall, out of anger and hurt. Changmin's rage had breached breaking point and the moment his foot was in the door he was gunning for the first thing he laid eyes on. The poor coffee table was now split down the middle and the accessories were now scattered carelessly around the room. For his safety, Yunho decided to restrain him until Yunho felt sure he wasn't going to do anything that would risk either of their lives.
Finally Yunho turned to his younger brother and sighed. He leaned in and pressed his forehead against Changmin's. The younger angel's forehead was clammy and tight. Yunho closed his eyes. “Min, please promise me you won't do anything else. I can't have you hurting yourself or me right now. I need to you to help me. This isn't your fault, so just remember that.”
Changmin's eyes were on Yunho and the remorse in them made Yunho believe that it was safe for the moment. In that moment Changmin relaxed and Yunho threw his arms around him tightly.
“I'm sorry,” Changmin whispered.
“Stop apologizing,” Yunho muttered back. Pulling away he smiled at Changmin slightly. “Come on, we need to-” A knock on the door interrupted him, and both angels stiffened defensively, ready for whatever came through that door. Yunho picked himself up and edged cautiously towards it, and opened the curtain on the narrow window beside the door an inch to see who it was. His shoulders relaxed and Changmin's form slightly loosened though he looked nervously on as Yunho pulled open the door.
“So you were here,” Koda sighed, “I had no idea where else to look after this if you weren't. May I come in?”
Yunho stepped out of the way and beckoned her to enter. When she did she looked at Changmin and sighed again. Her eyes told that she knew all that had happened and the sorrow was clearly evident. She didn't say anything for a long moment, and the two angels looked uneasily at each other. When she spoke her voice was grave and serious.
“You realize what you're planning to do is a suicide mission. Yunho, Jaejoong is in the hospital...I can't bear to see him lose his life because of your love.”
“So, like Rain you expect me to just give up on him?” Yunho demanded, “well that's impossible. I really do love him, and I can't even pretend in front of Rain that I don't care for Jaejoong. I know what risks I'm taking concerning him, but if I succeed Rain will never touch Jaejoong again.”
Koda came up and looked intently into his eyes. Then she pulled away and shook her head. “It is a dire situation, but I cannot control your feelings. What you say is completely true, so now I'll move onto the other reason why I'm here. You do know the real way to break this spell Rain has you under? This is where Jaejoong comes into play. It is important that you break your own spell before Changmin's, Yunho. You have to be a free agent before going against Rain.”
Yunho nodded. “Yeah, but how will I be able to free Changmin?”
“The emotions you feel at that moment will be strong enough to break through any spell. Since you and Changmin are linked, it should act as a chain reaction. But it has to be meaningful, and you'll need to distract Rain long enough to accomplish it.”
“I'll handle that,” Changmin piped up. Both Koda and Yunho turned to him and saw he was standing, looking determinedly at them. “He owes me for all the pain and suffering he's caused me.” He turned to Yunho. “Just try your best to time it so I don't end up killing myself instead.”
Nodding, Yunho looked at Changmin and smiled. “Looks like you don't need me to protect you anymore.”
“That's what I've been trying to tell you all along.”
“I'll go with Yunho to the hospital, and Changmin do your best to get Rain's attention for as long as you can. Let's pray this will all work out in the end.”
When Yunho and Koda left the apartment Changmin turned to the wall next to the door and closed his eyes. Like before, the wall shuddered and blurred slightly until a passageway appeared. Hesitantly Changmin took a step gingerly into the passageway but grew bolder with each step he took. He had to prove himself to Yunho, even if it meant he was signing a death contract.

At the hospital, Jaejoong had fallen asleep, and Junsu and Yoochun were seated staring at nothing in particular, wondering what was going to happen in the very near future. Their manager had left to do some other business and rescheduling leaving the two other singers to watch over their hyung. Neither of them said anything, they just sat huddled together for comfort. Suddenly, the sound of footsteps stopping at the door made them look up and they started up in surprise.
Yunho stood there with Koda, and he stared at Jaejoong guiltily. Koda stepped forward and quietly beckoned the two lovers to leave the room, which they were clearly hesitant about.
“It's okay,” she said softly, “these two need to be left alone for a bit. If you want we can sit just outside the door and talk about some things.”
There was a pause but then Yoochun led Junsu out, followed by Koda who placed a hand reassuringly on Yunho's arm. He barely acknowledged the gesture, for his eyes were trained on Jaejoong's sleeping form. Slowly he moved closer to the bed, his eyes drifting along the other man's body, wincing when he saw the broken arm up to the beautiful but scratched and bruised. Gently Yunho put his hand on the other man's forehead. Jaejoong stirred slightly and opened his eyes and gazed up at Yunho momentarily stunned. Then he recovered and a small smile touched his lips.
“Hey,” he muttered, “where have you been hiding?”
“Just had to settle some things before I came to visit you,” Yunho replied, “I'm sorry if it took so long.”
Jaejoong shook his head. “I was more worried that you were off doing something stupid. I-Koda told me about you.... The real you.”
The angel's cheeks flushed slightly and expression softened into what looked like shame. “I should have told you, but I didn't want you to get involved, but it's a little late for that now. All I can do now is apologize. I'm sorry.”
There was a pause while Jaejoong stared at Yunho and then he sighed, taking Yunho's hand in his own. “Don't beat yourself up. What's done is done, and there's nothing we can do to change it now.”
“There was something I wanted to tell you before, but I didn't get the chance, and it didn't feel right. But I have a feeling there is no perfect chance to do this so I might as well just say it.”
Yunho leaned over Jaejoong and squeezed his hand tightly. Jaejoong was speechless as he felt Yunho's warm breath against his lips, sending shivers along his body. His heart monitor spiked slightly as Yunho's cool hand touched his cheek and traced his jawline. Then the angel leaned closer and pressed his lips tightly against Jaejoong's. The heart monitor went crazy as Jaejoong's eyes widened and his body tensed. Then it kind of melted and he closed his eyes welcoming the most incredible kiss he ever had. It was soft and gentle. A tingling sensation coursed through his entire body, and a slight shimmer enveloped both of them. Yunho's hand moved to Jaejoong's broken arm and his fingers gingerly ran along it, leaving the tingling sensation along it. It was painful exactly, but uncomfortable, but Jaejoong easily forgot it. Beside them, the heart monitor stabilized and slowly Jaejoong felt his strength returning to him. Whenever the tingling feeling disappeared no pain replaced it. He could breath easily-well after the kiss anyway-without a searing pain.
As for Yunho, there was a tearing feeling in his chest. It tugged eagerly to break free but it couldn't; not yet. It was working, and Yunho smiled. He didn't need to say how he felt about Jaejoong because he could tell by the way they held each other and the passionate kiss they shared.
After what seemed like an eternity Yunho pulled away and Jaejoong looked longingly at the angel as if wanting more. As if wanting it to never end. It was like they had been in their own little world and they didn't want to leave it. Slowly Jaejoong's good hand moved up to his chest and he felt no pain, no trouble breathing. His bandaged hand didn't feel numb nor did it feel broken. It felt...healed.
“Yunho,” Jaejoong breathed, sitting up. “How did you do it? Yunho?”
Yunho had stepped back away from the bed, and was holding his chest as if to hold it together. His face was contorted in pain, and Jaejoong slipped out of bed and hurried over to him.
“What's wrong?” he demanded, “Yunho, what is it?”
“Get away,” Yunho groaned through clenched teeth. “It's breaking!”
“What is?”
“Get back!” Yunho snapped again. This time Jaejoong obeyed and made it behind the bed just in time.
From the doorway, Junsu, Yoochun and Koda watched nervously, but made no move to approach either of them. Yunho's body shuddered and suddenly his hands were thrown out and his back arched. His wings unfurled from his back, so grand that they knocked over the heart monitor and IV drip machines and some dishes that were on the other side. They were a brilliant black, so dark they resembled the night sky. His head was tilted back and out of his chest a black mist exploded from it. It slithered down his body and to the ground, where it vanished. When it was all gone Yunho collapsed to the ground and Jaejoong scrambled over the bed and rushed to his side.
“Yunho,” he muttered, “are you alright?”
Slowly Yunho's eyes opened and he brought a hand up to Jaejoong's face and rested it there. “I'm fine. Thank-you so much for giving me your love.”
Koda stepped forward and smiled. “It worked, the spell is broken. Now let's hope the same goes for Changmin.” She knelt next to Jaejoong. “And you're healed as well.”
“Hyung!” Junsu squeaked, running in, “what are you doing out of bed? What happened to all your scratches and...everything?!”
“Yunho did it,” Jaejoong muttered, “I'm fine. He healed me.”
Yunho sat up and rubbed his chest. It felt lighter and he felt happier than he had for a long time. He took Jaejoong's hand and kissed it and then stood up. “We need to find Changmin. I don't know how long he'll be able to hold Rain off on his own.”
Koda nodded. “I haven't seen anything yet, but if I do I'll let you know. Junsu, Yoochun, please do as we discussed. If something does happen the citizens need to be safe. Try and get as many people into the
barracks as possible. Including the king and the children. By now they've surely noticed the queen is missing. It shouldn't take too long. I've already set up a broadcast to make the announcement. In the meantime, Yunho, you should look for Changmin yourself. Do you know where he would go?”
“I can think of one place.” He looked at Jaejoong. “Please come with me. I don't want to lose sight of you.”
Nodding, Jaejoong smiled and they all departed the hospital, after the doctors examined Jaejoong's miracle recovery with awe and confusion.
☪
Changmin entered the chamber and his brothers looked up at him with surprise. They all looked like they had been treated poorly since the last time Changmin and Yunho had been there, and Changmin knew that Rain knew they had been in there. They all looked pale and weak, but at the sight of their older brother some of that lost energy came back. Above them was another cage, far more secure than the other ones, and there sat Boa, who was pacing it relentlessly. When Changmin entered she paused and fear flitted across her face, but then was smoothed away until no emotion showed.
“Hyung you shouldn't be here,” Jonghyun said, “they set up a trap!”
“Why did you have to go and spoil the surprise,” someone giggled from the shadows. “It would have been more fun to see his reaction.”
Changmin froze when he heard the giggles that surrounded him. They bounced off the walls and making it impossible for him to pinpoint where the witches were. His hands curled into fists as he surveyed the room and that's when he noticed a glimmer of silver in the shadows and then his black wings spread out elegantly. They stretched so far that they brushed one of the cages, but there was still enough room for him to manoeuvre. He lunged at the place he saw the glimmer and heard a satisfying squeal and his foot hit something. But then something tugged on his wing and he stumbled back and whirled around just in time to see one of the witches-Narsha-was the culprit. Spinning, he caught her by surprise and he flung her against Key's cage, making him jump. Then he sprung into action and caught her hair and tied it to the bars. She screamed and growled, making Key chuckled until she tossed a ball of fire his way, making him duck down.
There was a tugging in Changmin's chest that was difficult to ignore but he had no choice. Ga-In was coming for him, throwing everything she had at him. A ball of light hit his wing, creating a searing pain and making him lose focus for a moment. Then he lunged at her and an invisible force hit her, sending her sprawling on the ground near the entrance. Jea and Miryo attacked him from both sides at once, one managing to get a hit on him, and the other giving a hit but then receiving one as well. Changmin stumbled back and Ga-In took advantage of this vulnerability. She grabbed one of his wings and all of a sudden pain shot through every nerve of Changmin's body. Protectively his wings folded around him, and he crouched down, wondering what he should do.
Above, Boa stared down horrified at the scene. She pressed herself as close as she could against the bars, pleading with Changmin.
“Don't kill yourself,” she whispered, “why are you doing this?”
The witches advanced on the fallen angel, and his brothers and mother watched fearfully. Under the safety of his wings, Changmin felt the pain slowly disappear but then the tugging from before was back and worse
than ever. His chest felt constricted, but he didn't know where it was coming from. There was a pounding and he closed his eyes.
“What the hell?” he asked himself, panicking.
The witches surrounded him, looking curiously.
“Ga-In, what did you do to him?” Narsha asked, “that didn't last long did it?”
Ga-In scoffed and shook her head. “I hardly put a dent in him! He's an angel for crying out loud!”
Before anyone could say anything or move a muscle, Changmin's wings spread out and his arms flew out. His wings smacked Ga-In and Narsha and they hit the walls and landed unconscious. A black mist poured out of Changmin's chest, and Boa sat up a smile tracing her lips.
“It worked,” she said, hope lining her voice.
The mist disappeared and Changmin slumped over and wiped his hand over his forehead. His chest felt lighter, and he felt better, like a weight was lifted off his shoulders. “What was that?”
Jea and Miryo stared wide-eyed at him, but it was Boa who answered. “Yunho did it! Changmin you can use your powers now!”
Changmin stood up shakily and turned to the two standing witches. They looked nervously at each other but was spared the fight because suddenly Rain appeared and it didn't take much to notice how furious he was. Jea and Miryo slipped against a wall in the shadows so they were away from his rage.
“How did this happen?” he snapped. His voice boomed throughout the chamber. “I stopped this from happening!”
“Clearly you don't have as much control over them as you thought,” Boa replied dryly. Rain's head snapped up at her and suddenly she collapsed, unconscious. The five angels in the cages gasped and gripped the bars but Changmin turned to Rain.
“Your plans stop here,” he growled.
Rain looked at him, feigning fear. “Oh? You think after what you did to my beautiful ladies that I'm going to be defeated so easily? Think again my boy.” Suddenly he was in front of Changmin and grabbed his neck. “Did you really believe I was going to let you go after the spell broke? You haven't even seen my true power yet, but now I'm not going to hold back.”
He threw Changming against the cages. Taemin slipped closer to him and noticed his cage had been dented enough that the lock caved slightly. His eyes widened and Changmin noticed it as well. He nodded once at Taemin and then stood. Rain didn't give him the chance to prepare for another attack and Changmin flew backwards, and there was a snapping sound. His wing was bent at a terrible angle, and he cried out in pain. Slowly the wings folded back in but this time he was prepared and Rain was flung backwards, hitting the two witches hiding in the shadows. They shrieked and vanished. Glowering Rain stood up and in the next minute Changmin was pinned to the wall.
“This will be a pretty event. You're whole family is here to see you die,” Rain smiled.
“Well, the thing is he isn't going to die. You're outnumbered Rain,” Yunho said.
Looking over, Rain noticed Yunho standing there with Jaejoong, Taemin, Jonghyun, Key, Onew, and Minho. Yunho took a step forward and glanced at Changmin then back at Rain. “It's over. Right now the White City citizens are being sent into the bunkers and the spell over us is broken. What more can you do?”
Rain didn't answer for a while. Then slowly he turned back to Changmin, and sighed. “You're right, it is over. Say goodbye.”
Suddenly, Changmin cried out and Yunho stepped forward, heart stopping when he saw the blood seep through the other angel's shirt. It stained the shirt and trickled to the ground. Changmin struggled but more tears appeared making him moan and his eyes rolled back.
“Leave him alone!” Yunho yelled, and Rain was thrown from his feet and hit the ceiling of the cave, then the ground. Changmin collapsed on the ground, and lay there silently. Taemin hurried towards him and crouched down. Then Rain hit the walls, and Boa's cage. Slowly she stirred and gazed down. Her eyes landed on Changmin and it sparked a fury.
“This ends now,” she snapped, and the cage's hinges snapped. It exploded sending shatters of glass everywhere.
“Rain you will not be hurting any of my children or any of those human beings again!” Boa said, advancing on the beat up figure on the ground. “There will be no more suffering.”
Rain didn't even have time to stand up before he was sprawled out on the floor, unmoving and lifeless.
Yunho knelt down beside Taemin, Changmin's head in his lap. Changmin's breathing was ragged but he stared up at Yunho and smiled weakly. Yunho took his hand and held it tightly. Taemin's cheeks were stained with silent tears as he smoothed Changmin's hair.
“Is Rain...dead?” he whispered.
“Yeah he is,” Yunho nodded, “we're free Min, no more control. We don't have to be afraid anymore. Tomorrow we'll wake up and go back to doing what we did before everything.”
Changmin smiled. “Good.” He winced and Yunho looked at his chest. It was soaked red and Changmin was pale and cold. Taemin looked up at him nervously, and Yunho rested a hand gently on his shoulder.
“You and Jaejoong can live happily ever after now,” Changmin said, his voice trailing.
“We can...but you'll still see us,” Yunho whispered. His voice cracked and his eyesight misted over. Desperately he tried to hold back his tears but one escaped and trailed down his cheek. "Stay with us Min, please wake up.... Changmin?” Changmin's eyes closed slowly. Yunho looked up at Boa who had drifted over and was now kneeling beside them.
She looked down at Changmin and rested a hand on his chest. Behind them, Jaejoong and the other angels were watching silently. They knew what she was going to do.
“I can try but no promises. Rain's magic is too strong and usually can't be reversed,” she said softly, “I won't give up without trying.”
Her hand glided along his chest, and her other one rest on his forehead. There was a slight glow and Yunho squeezed Changmin's clammy hand even tighter.
