It's no secret I'm a fussy reader and an even fussier writer. I dabble in fandom more than actively play, but there are periods in which I'll immerse myself completely, sign up for challenges or exchanges and confuse the life out of my recipient. So to make everyone's life easier, this is the official guide to the things Lil likes in fandom and fic!
FANDOMS
I want to preface this by saying I will read almost anything, for any fandom, as long as it's well written and the characters are believable. I can't stress this enough. I've read band rpf for bands I don't really know and loved it because the writer was amazing. Similarly, I've read fics on ff.net for a fandom I adore and shut the page after two paragraphs because the writer was appalling. If it sounds like Fifty Shades of Grey, not only will I not read it, I will unfriend you for recommending it in the first place.* That said, if you're in a mood to recommend I read (or watch) something, the following list of my past and present fandoms might help to give you an idea of the things I generally like. Alphabetical by fandom.
* I'm not kidding. Not even a little bit.
[I really don't have 'past' fandoms as such, since I always go back to them, but for the purpose of this list, past fandoms are those I'm not actively watching/reading, re-watching/re-reading, writing for, or reading fic of.]
Present: How to Get Away With Murder, Mr Robot, The Witcher.
Past: Angel, Ashes to Ashes, Black Books, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dexter, Doctor Who, Doctrine of Labyrinths, Dollhouse, Fringe, Grey's Anatomy, Harry Potter, Lolita, Lost, Life on Mars (UK), Lip Service, Much Ado About Nothing (2011), Obernewtyn, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pride & Prejudice (BBC), Queer as Folk (US), Sailor Moon, St Trinian's, Stockholm Syndrome, Supernatural, The L Word, The Mighty Boosh, The Prisoner (2009).
PAIRINGS
I'm not as easy going with pairings as I am with the rest of my fannish pursuits. I have very definite ideas about which pairings I like and, by association, which I don't. I will sometimes read outside my chosen pairing, but not if it's a pair that breaks my usual ship.
Below is a list of my general fandom tendencies, as well as list of acceptable and unacceptable pairings for each category. If it's not on there, chances are I don't feel super strongly about it one way or the other.
- If it's canon, het, and disgustingly romantic, I'll probably love it.
Examples: 2/313, Annie/Sam, Alex/Gene, Beatrice/Benedick, Buffy/Angel, Elspeth/Rushton, Lizzie/Mr. Darcy, Meredith/Derek, Olivia/Peter, Willow/Oz.
Exceptions: Amy/Rory, Dexter/Rita, Harry/Ginny, Topher/Bennett, Elizabeth/Will.
- If it's canon and gay, I'll probably love it.
Examples: Brian/Justin, Dom/Darlene, Felix/Mildmay, Frankie/Cat, Haruka/Michiru, Pip/Lindsay, Utena/Anthy, Vince/Howard, Willow/Tara.
Exceptions: Bette/Tina, Willow/Kennedy, Carmen/Shane.
- If it's not canon and gay, I'll almost certainly love it.
Examples: Buffy/Faith, Dean/Castiel, Harry/Draco, Izzie/Addison, Kelly/Annabel, Usagi/Rei.
Exceptions: Olivia/Astrid.
- If it's doomed, tortured, or otherwise unlikely, I will ship it till the cows come home.
Examples: Adelle/Topher, Buffy/Spike, Buffy/Willow, Clara/Eleven, Clara/Twelve, Donna/Ten, Harry/Draco, Harry/Severus, Kitty/Nan, Narcissa/Bellatrix, Remus/Sirius, Shannon/Boone.
Exceptions: Olivia/Lincoln, Eleven/River.
- If it's taboo or involves pseudo-incestuous themes between siblings, I will quite likely make grabby hands.
Examples: Boone/Shannon, Dexter/Debra, Felix/Mildmay, Humbert/Lolita, Sam/Dean.
- If it's crack, I will both love it and work out a way to write it.
Examples: Olivia/alt!Olivia, Ten/TARDIS, Vince/Vince.
- If it's RPF that will never happen in a million years, I'll love it and make Tree write it for me.
Examples: Anna/Josh, Dave/Cate, Fran/Olivia, Olivia/Keeley.
- If it's RPF that's almost certainly happened at some point, I'll love it and write it myself.
Examples: Missy/Butterfly, Noel/Julian.
KINKS & TROPES I GENERALLY LIKE
alternate universes, angry/hate sex, bondage, bumming, corsets, cross dressing, crossovers, dress up, exhibitionism, feathers, first time, fix-its, foreign language fetish, genderfuck, holiday fic, letter fic, literotica, masturbation, mental illness*, mindfuck, nail biting, noir, orgasm denial, period costume, plotless porn, power play, sex while drunk/drugged, spanking, step-siblings, steampunk, time travel, voyeurism, wall sex, wax
SQUICKS & TROPES I GENERALLY DON'T LIKE
abuse, aliens made us do it, baby fic, bloodplay, character death, drugs that require needles, fifty shades of anything, graphic violence, gore, mpreg, non-con/rape, parent/child incest, purple prose, scat, sex during pregnancy, shag or die, song fic, tentacles, torture, zombies
THINGS I WILL CONSENT TO READ IF THEY ARE WELL-EXECUTED
angst, dub-con, dystopia, emotional trauma*, food play, non-graphic abuse or violence, watersports
* Please, please, if you're going to recommend something to me that utilises one of these tropes, check to make sure I'm in an okay place myself. Curiosity will always get the better of me, but reading about schizophrenia, anorexia, or trauma bonding while I'm emotionally fragile or having a depressive episode isn't going to do any of us any good.
I also have an FAQ relating to trigger warnings, which applies to both random and non-fandom entries, and which you can find
here.
